Now not being an American I maybe wrong, but the electoral college system determines how many electorial college votes each state has based on population.
Yeah, this is where you are wrong. The number of electors for a state is the number of Representatives in the House plus two, the number of Senators. This gives electors from states with smaller populations more of a voice, relative to population, than electors from states with larger populations. In civics class, I was taught that this is an incentive for states with small populations to join the Union.
