I think it was more "narrative laziness" they wanted to imply both had just woken up and were going to start their day but it'd take several panels to show one of them waking up, going down the hall and going into the other's room, or whatever. Easier and quicker to get the idea across by showing them in the same bed (well, actually two single beds as there appears to be two head boards, but then the dividing line between the two beds' mattresses makes it appear the beds are pushed together) talking after just waking up and the... "undertones" implied by the picture probably never really dawned on anyone.
Besides, it makes perfect sense for a 30-something male millionaire to sleep with a teenage boy in a completely platonic way.
