70. Brave (B+)
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall last year: can Lasseter's men put him back together again? The answer is, well, kinda. This is a pretty decent movie, and I expect it's being graded on a curve by the critics, hence the middling reception; but then, that's always been the case with films (Spielberg has made some movies in the 00s that would have been considered crown jewels from a lesser director). Because, make no mistake, this is a very generic movie. The early teasers make it look like it's going to be a somewhat dark epic, but it really isn't; it's arguably the smallest, least-plotted Pixar film (of the ones I've seen, that is, all of them less A Bug's Life
and the two Cars
films). It's pretty much a melange of Disney fairy tale tropes, ones that the parent studio has used before and better.
