According to the Memory Alpha entry for the ENT

However, if the loss of Ceti Alpha VI was due to external tampering, it would mean that either those colonists would have avoided Khan's fate in the Prime timeline... or perhaps that someone else might have been tinkering with the Shedai legacy in their reality.
