As I've established, and others have confirmed, writing scenes using a captain's first name doesn't work very well, and is off-putting.
If you dipped into the Original Series you would write scenes in the vein of
'James strode from the turbolift onto the bridge' or
'James dived for cover as the Romulan disruptor bolt scorched the air above his head'?
Doesn't work. Looks wrong.
