Between increased work and the return of the regular TV season, my rate of film viewing has gone way down lately.
Kubrick's first big successful film, a 1957 Kirk Douglas vehicle; Spartacus
remains my favourite Kubrick film, so I was hoping this would be more along those lines, but while it's good, it's not on that level. Tonally we're still mixing hyper-serious drama and bits of absurdist black comedy, which mostly works. The depiction of the trenches holds up quite well more than 50 years later.
The execution scene still has a punch, though it didn't really surprise me given not just the several decades of bleaker film endings and the fact that this is a Kubrick movie so a depressing ending is the expected ending; it would have been more surprising if they actually had been saved. Good performance by Kirk Douglas, and most of the rest of the cast.
