Hehe those were fun to model. I did find the hexagon mesh shadow distracting and found that the TOS production crew had interesting ways of not having those show up
How did they work around it?
From experimenting, soft overhead lighting and/or directed lighting to send the shadow away where it wasn't too distracting. If you look real hard you can spot soft hexagons cast on objects or walls immediately next to it but rarely would you see the hexagons more than a couple of feet away. If you were to try and build interior lighting at where you think they would be on a starship, those hexagon shadows would be everywhere IMHO
