The thing I don't get about him though, is why he is so damn fussy. Surely a clever bloke like him can figure out that, for example, a special 'spot' where he 'sits' is the sort of totally irrational behaviour we see in five year olds.

I think it's fairly obvious that Sheldon has some sort of autism spectrum disorder.
