I agree, I think "Out of Gas" is one of the best hours of television.
What else would you put in your top hours of TV?
In no particular order:
DS9's "The Visitor."
TNG's "The Inner Light."
House's "House's Head" and "Wilson's Heart."
Firefly's "Out of Gas" and "Serenity" (the pilot episode.)
TOS's "City on the Edge of Forever."
Enterprise's "Twilight" (Having Archer being a sparkling vampire and T'Pol a stammering Vulcan woman in lover with him was an interesting take on the characters.
That's just from the top of my head and I'm sure if I thought about it longer I could come up with many more.
Simon saving the patient is very blatantly designed to make us feel better about the crew stealing medicine from a hospital (but I love River's smile of pride when he does it).
Actually, no. We "feel better" about this when Zoe tells us the hospital would never miss the medicine and could have itself restocked within very little time. The scene with Simon saving the dying patient (aparently in post-op recovery in a community room?!) was designed to show us how good of a doctor Simon is and the potential life he gave up in order to save his sister.
