'Brit' comes from British. Butler is Scottish, part of Great Britain, and therefore qualified. Colin Farrell comes from the Republic of Ireland and does not therefore qualify as a Brit by any standard or reckoning. The confusion is entirely yours.

No it's not. That's a term which has no legal, historical or geographical basis. If it has any definition, it's Great Britain, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands and the Islands off Scotland, the Shetlands etc. Not Ireland.
And we in Ireland simply don't like it.

in the context of your post, it was reasonable to assume that you were lumping Farrell in with the Brits. But I note your clarification.
