JustKate! I purposely stayed away from fandom (except for working conventions) for many years for the same reason. My ex-fiancee is one of those types, often to my public embarrassment in times past.
I found this site while looking for articles about the 'proposed' new movie by JJ Abrams. It was on trekmovie.com and you know where it refers people!!
