Re: Star Trek: A Rendezvous With Destiny--A Tale of Captain Ezri Dax

All right folks--the "transition scene".

Happy Thanksgiving, BTW--and, coincidently, Black Friday!

Star Trek: Aventine
A Rendezvous With Destiny
Scene 7

Captain Dax rushed onto the bridge, Ambassador Spock close behind. “Lieutenant Mirren, delete the message to Empress Donatra, and write a new one. Inform her of the situation, but also let her know…that the ambassador will be arriving on schedule, via runabout.”

Sam Bowers looked at his captain in shock. “Captain…?”

Ezri turned to him, and smiled. “And also tell her…that I will be arriving as well, and that I look forward to meeting her again.”

Mirren nodded. “Aye, Captain.”

Sir…” Bowers frowned, and lowered his voice so that the crew wouldn’t hear, “I don’t have to tell you that—”

“Come on, Sam. Surely you can handle that relief mission on your own.”

“Of course, sir, but as first officer, let me remind you—”

“And besides, I look forward to this. A chance of a lifetime, as they say.”

“Nonetheless, Captain,” Ambassador Spock replied, stepping forward, matching their hushed tones, “Your first officer is correct. Starfleet Code, Section 12, Paragraph 4—”

“…is more of a…guideline…than a rule,” Ezri said, a playful glint in her eye.

Bowers frowned. “Well, in that case, Captain…I’ll have Security—”

“No need. We can take care of ourselves out there, Sam. Besides…it wouldn’t do to crowd the shuttle, now would it?”

“But…if something should happen…”

“Then I trust you’ll put me on report.”

The ambassador raised an eyebrow. “Indeed.”

Sam shook his head. Why do I even bother?

“Message ready, Captain,” Mirren announced.

“Very good, Lieutenant. Send it over.”

“Aye, sir.”

“The ship is yours, Commander,” Ezri announced as she headed for the turbolift, Spock following close behind. “Take good care of her.”

“I will, Captain.”

As the doors closed, Bowers let out a sigh. Sometimes, Ezri, I just can’t figure you out….

"The saying implies but does not name the effective agency of its supposed utopia.... 'Needs and abilities' are, of course, subjective. So the operative statement may be reduced to 'the State shall take, the State shall give'."
