I must admit, the story spung out of a desire to answer my own question of why Ezri had hand-picked Simon to be the CMO, out of all her options. (I had
been wondering why she didn't pick Julian--but then I'd learned about what had happened in Unjoined
I figured there must have been some kind of connection, some element of familiarity. And then I remembered Simon's place in the Star Trek canon. And...the rest is history.
