The "interstitial material", as some reviewers called it, in A Singular Destiny
put me in mind of similar approaches in other novels I've enjoyed in recent years. To name two: David Brin's Earth
, and Robert Sawyer's Terminal Experiment
. Stuff that served purposes ranging from mood-setting to background info-dumping to comedy relief to foreshadowing.
