Brooks In 'Death Of A Salesman'

Avery Brooks, best known to Star Trek fans for his work on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, is taking on the role of the salesman Willy Loman in a multicultural version of The Death of a Salesman.

As reported by, this version of Death of a Salesman is still set in Brooklyn, New York in the 1940s. The Loman family is a black family in a mixed neighborhood. Willy Loman, a down-on-his-luck salesman, is trying to prove himself in a white world.

"It's a very cultural look at the American Dream," said Brooks, an Oberlin alumnus. Brooks will be working with Director Justin Emeka, who portrays Biff Loman. Brooks and Emeka met in 1996 during graduation festivities at Oberlin. Brooks was in attendance to receive an honorary doctorate.

According to Brooks, Death of a Salesman is a very challenging piece, but this is not due to the non-traditional approach. "This conveyance of culture is the more important thing to do," he said.

Death of a Salesman, which has already sold out, will be held at Oberlin College's Hall Auditorium from September 18th through the 20th, at 8 P.M., with a 2 P.M. afternoon performance on Sunday, September 21st.
