Is that awesome or what? Its amazing that shows like TOS and STNG can still get brand new releases like this. Yes I know Paramount is cashing in on the new movie, and that a lot of us have these, but this proves that classic TV can survive! I for one do not have BOBW on DVD so I will probably buy this.

These "Best of..." sets are only regular DVD, not Blu-ray. TNG needs A LOT of work before it's ready for High Def.

Ah you are right, I was looking at the movie set packaging when I wrote that..corrected! I agree too, I'd like to see STNG "restored" to film and with new FX. I'm not holding my breath though.

Crapped my pants, shot over to amazon to find out that THEY STILL DON'T HAVE A RELEASE DATE FOR TNG BLU RAY!!!! ... Let me catch my breath. ... Now I'm exhausted and sad. :(

It does if they ever do it in HD. I suspect in the end they'll just upscale the video, then fob us off with some new cgi effects.

Classy packaging though - is that a first for a Star Trek VHS/DVD release?

I'm curious; if they did release it on Blu-Ray, would there be any quality improvements to the original material? IIRC, one of the reasons they were able to do TOS on HD-DVD and get quality improvement was that they originally shot the material on film, instead of video tape which is what is normally used for tv shows.

Though, I must admit one idea that would be interesting is that if they released the blu-ray disks at standard-definition with dvd bitrates (1500-9000 kbps), they could probably fit an entire season on one blu-ray disk.

Yeah, I can't see this happening. Technically there are no issues, but folks have been taught to associate "Blu-Ray" with "HD" and I can't see the studios doing anything to disrupt that. There's no incentive on their side as disc production costs are negligible to start with, also there's the psychological factor of associating value with the number of discs in the package.

TNG was also shot on film. Only for the post-production work (editting, VFX) was it transferred to video.
