Smith Reviews 'Star Trek XI'

Writer/Director <font color=yellow>Kevin Smith</font> has seen <i>Star Trek XI</i> and gives it the "thumbs up."<p>As reported by <A class="link" HREF="http://moviesblog.mtv.com">MTV</A>, Smith (<i>Clerks</i>, <i>Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back</i>) recently got a sneak preview of <i>Star Trek XI</i> and gave his opinion on the latest <i>Star Trek</i> film. "It's really strong," said Smith. "[J.J. Abrams] was rejiggering the opening few scenes."<p>Initially, Smith had reservations regarding the attempt to restart the <i>Star Trek</i> franchise. "It's one of those things where you first heard about it and were like 'no they're not going to redo 'Star Trek'," said Smith. "And then you see the movie and you think, 'Wow he did pull it off! He turned it into a viable renewed franchise."<p>Smith has special praise for the performance of <font color=yellow>Chris Pine</font>. "Chris Pine is fantastic," said Smith. "It is a star-making performance. From his first scene forward, this dude is not doing an impression of Shatner. He is doing young Kirk. He doesn't have the slow delivery mannerisms of Shatner but itís totally James T. Kirk, the bravado, the self-assuredness. It's such a great performance. You can't take your eyes off the guy. Anytime he's not on the screen youíre waiting for him to get back."<p><font color=yellow>Zoe Saldana's</font> performance also caught Smith's attention. "And the chick [Zoe Saldana] who plays Uhura is really great. They made Uhura really interesting." <p>To read the article, head to the link located <A class="link" HREF="http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/09/10/exclusive-kevin-smiths-star-trek-review-says-chris-pines-kirk-is-a-star-making-performance/">here</A>.<center></center>

Although Kevin Smith is mostly a Star Wars fan, he knows Star Trek as well. The fact that he likes ST-XI bodes well.

He also liked the, and I quote, "phenomenal" Star Wars prequels. I'll wait for a real reviewer, not another studio shill.

Any other Trek fans out there lost interest like I have? This is literally the first Trek movie I am not really excited about at all. I'll probably see it but, meh.

Hey OmahaStar, you coming up to Minnesota for the big drive-in triple feature (The Monster of Phantom Lake, It Came From Another World! and Cave Women on Mars) in October?

Isn't this news, like, a month or so old?

Not sure yet. There's a good chance, though. :D

Yep.

Glad to hear that Pine comes off strong. He was potentially the weakest link, in my mind.

It'll be interesting to see how Pine can "do young Kirk" as Smith puts it without having any of Shatner's mannerisms or delivery. That ought to be eye-opening.

I'm guessing that he'll be more of your 'textbook stalwart young hero' than a young Kirk-as-played-by-William-Shatner, and that there will be just enough to his performance that will let our minds connect the dots to Shatner's Kirk.

Nobody could pull off Shatner's Kirk. And no one should ever try.

I find my interest beginning to fade -- the fact that it sounds like they've opted to present Kirk as the standard sort of swaggering steriod case rather than the "stack of books with legs" who was "positively grim" as a cadet doesn't bode well. Nonetheless, all the hype without any real substance is tedious.

Not even Shatner? :(

I couldn't agree more. Tedious. Exactly.
