Pegg On 'Star Trek XI' and Chris Doohan

Waiting a bit longer for <i>Star Trek XI</i> will make the anticipation greater, says the new Scotty, <font color=yellow>Simon Pegg</font> <p>As reported by <A class="link" HREF="http://www.aintitcool.com">Ain't It Cool News</A>, it was a smart move by <font color=yellow>J.J. Abrams</font> in not bringing any <i>Star Trek XI</i> to Comic-Con recently. "I think J.J. was sensible to not just come here with nothing to show the fans," said Pegg. I think there was a consensus that, yes, Star Trek was going to be here this year. And J.J. made a point of not shortchanging anybody by just bringing in something that wasn't finished or doing another 'Here's the cast' kind of thing."<p>The delay will just make fans keener to see the finished product, according to Pegg. "I think it's just going to serve to make the anticipation greater," he said. "When he finally is ready to show something...I mean, I've seen a little bit and I was screaming. I had my hand over my mouth 'Oh my God!' It's so good. I just think it's going to be huge."<p>To get Scotty's accent right, Pegg relied on his "dialect coach," his wife, Maureen, who hails from Glasgow. "Maureen was on set the whole time," said Pegg. "Her family are from Glasgow and Scotty is from Linlithgow, which I think is in the northwest." <p>To help with other fine points of Scotty's character, Pegg turned to <font color=yellow>Chris Doohan</font>, the son of the original Scotty, <font color=yellow>James Doohan</font>. "I was fortunate to have Chris Doohan be my assistant in one of the scenes in one of the rooms on the Starship Enterprise," said Pegg. He went on to add that that Chris had been "perhaps moving things around." "Chris is James Doohan's oldest son," said Pegg, "and he contacted me, and we hooked up. And it was really lovely to have him sit next to me so we could talk. And he plays one of the crew, and he told me loads of stories about hanging out with his dad on set. He was there when they were filming 'The Trouble with Tribbles' and I think they apparently opened the little hatch where all the Tribbles were and sent them spilling everywhere much to his father's consternation."<p>To read more, head to the article located <A class="link" HREF="http://www.aintitcool.com/node/38030">here</A>.<center></center>

Nice of Simon to give props to his boss and all. But... umm... wasn't there a story on here not all that long ago that Abrams was complaining that Paramount didn't have anything for Comic-Con?

So, is this simply Simon being out of the loop, or is Abrams trying employ a little... "I meant to do that" revisionism.

Personally, I think it would "serve to make the anticipation greater" if something were shown to the fans. The sooner, the better. But J.J. Abrams likes his "mysteries". Well, bully for him but not everyone feels the same way he does. I'd like him to at least throw us a bone. These "it's gonna be great" pronouncements are getting a bit tiresome. Is anyone else with me on this?

Why not show the whole movie in a small box on TV while showing a couple of OT episodes.....

You basically said everything that's been on my mind, Pioneer. I think we need a serious bone thrown at us since we have the additional wait for the finished product. I still think it's just plain dumb to sit on the film for four and a half months, if in fact, it's actually going to be completed by mid-December anyway (at least according to J.J. that's the plan).

I mean, what would've been the harm of showing off a half-dozen or so still photos from the set?

Maybe they can get Robert Zemeckis to put together the first full trailer... in which every plot twist, surprise and revelation will be revealed. :)

I'm guessing when he said this to his wife, she corrected him. ;)

Pegg was on a Chicago radio program (WLUP, 97.9FM, Johnathon Brandmeier) this morning and was talking about his latest movie. Johnny B. asked him about portraying Scotty and Pegg talked it up very positively but very generally as well. Johnny asked if he would say the types of phrases old Scotty was famous for and he said "no."
