D.C. Fontana To Co-Write 'Star Trek' Comic Series
 

<font color=yellow>D.C. Fontana</font>, in her first foray into comic book storytelling, will join <font color=yellow>Derek Chester</font> in writing a new series of stories for <i>Star Trek Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment</i>, a series of stories which delve into the fourth year of the original Enterprise's five year mission.<p>As reported in a press release by <A class="link" HREF="http://www.idwpublishing.com/">IDW Publishing</A>, D.C. Fontana will join Chester in writing the five part series. This is the second series of IDW's <i>Star Trek Year Four</i> series, the first being released in 2007.<p>Fontana began her <i>Star Trek</i> career as assistant to <font color=yellow>Gene Roddenberry</font>. She went on to write original series <i>Star Trek</i> episodes including: <i>Tomorrow is Yesterday</i>, <i>Friday's Child</i>, <i>Journey to Babel</i> and <i>The Enterprise Incident.</i>. She penned the <i>Yesteryear</i> episode for <i>Star Trek: The Animated Series</i>. Fontana also worked on <i>Star Trek: The Next Generation</i> and <i>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine</i>. More recently, she wrote for <i>Star Trek: New Voyages</i> which is now known as <i>Star Trek: Phase II</i>.<p><i>The Enterprise Experiment</i> is a sequel to Fontana's <i>Star Trek: The Enterprise Incident</i> episode. In this story, Federation efforts to fully adapt the cloaking device to Starfleet ships leads to an experiment gone awry, trapping Kirk and Spock on an Enterprise out of phase with space itself. At the same time, Romulan forces close in on the starship, intent on claiming revenge for their stolen technology. Later chapters in the series will provide a sequel to the first two issues, as the Klingon Empire, with its own agenda, suddenly enters the fray.<p>"The story is absolute classic Trek in the best sense of the word," said <font color=yellow>Andrew Steven Harris</font>, <i>Star Trek</i> editor at IDW Publishing. "We're thrilled to have talent like this, people who've been working on Star Trek for decades. You can't find comic book storytellers who know these characters and settings more intimately."<p>The first monthly issue of Star Trek Year Four: The Enterprise Experiment goes on sale in April.<center></center>

Experimentation with a cloaking device that causes the Enterprise to go out of phase... hmmm, sounds familiar for some reason. But then again are there any original ideas left when it comes to Star Trek? Ones that don't refer to other episodes or events/technology/politics from within the already established "Star Trek Universe". Not that those can't be entertaining. In fact I'd like to see more comics and graphic novels continuing the stories of the rest of the shows. Now don't I just sound like a hypocrite.

I didn't see the first release of comics, but, will the likenesses in these new books be of those from the original cast (Shatner, Nimoy, etc) or of the new one?

The impression I got from the article was that it was the original.

Yes, he/she/it chose not to enter his/her/its age, name, or gender on his/her/its public profile. Must be ashamed of his/her/its youth. Western society must be becoming more like the Japanese all the time. The Japanese revere the wisdom that comes with age or at least they humor old fools. The West -- not so much. But now!

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes! Dorothy is a good writer. Great, even. I know "certain (female) writers" on this forum who would do well to take some well-needed advice from Dorothy Fontana.
