TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
A lady brought into the pawn shop some Star Trek props she thought were used in the show. She bought them at a garage sale and there was no provenance to their history. Johnny "the toy expert" stated they were not mass produced toys but could be props, but because there was no history on these items he said they could be sold only as "prop replicas" with a value of $700-800, they bought the 3 items for $500. Now I know these are not actual TV props, but does anyone know who the manufacturer is on these? and what they might acutally be worth?

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
YouTube has plenty of videos with detailed analysis of the Playmates and Art Asylum TOS landing party equipment. That said, at first glance, the items in the photos look like toys from either company, not any of the rough or "hero" props made for TOS.

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
The communicator looks like it could have been built up from the prop kits that were sold in the 1970s and early 80s by a guy who claimed his name was (no kidding) "James T. Kirk."
The phaser looks like a casting taken off of a very old small-run fan-made prop or prop kit - we saw a lot of those phasers with installed lights and that square red Radio Shack contact switch for a trigger. |
Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
I saw this episode and I thought those props resembled something that you'd find at a convention in the 1970's. Even though they said they don't take scripts, I'd be very interested in that first draft script of Star Trek IV. That's probably the draft that had Eddie Murphy in it.

Is that supposed to be Shatner's toupee?

I don't know how the TV show ended up, but the "experts" seemed to be spouting off, rather than being familiar with such a well known piece of TV history. |

I am sure that the members over at the RPF would know and be able to quickly identify them.

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
I hate to say it, but that communicator looks almost EXACTLY like a prop I bought at a convention in the mid-1980s. The lid was even slightly askew like the one in the photo. While I think it's a pretty good reproduction, I don't think it was used on the show. I know mine wasn't.

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
It's not really a "prop" if it wasn't used on a show. It's a replica.

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
That is fun, I am a huge Trek prop guy, and I was wondering when some stuff would show up on Pawn Stars!

Re: TOS "Props" on Pawn Stars
Ok, "replica." point being, the one I have has never been in any production of Star Trek, as far as I know, and I don't think the one pictured above has, either.
