starships underwater.
In the trailer, the Jjprise seems to be rising from underwater. Is that just a matter of more power to the SIF and defectors from being inside a gaseous atmosphere?

Yes.

Re: starships underwater.
In VOY episode "Thirty Days", they had the Delta Flyer reconfigured to go underwater.
Janeway stated it would take a few weeks to get Voyager ready to do that where as Delta Flyer would've been done in a few days. If Starfleet was properly super prepared, every Starship would've been underwater and atmospheric ready. But that's how I would run Starfleet. Be super prepared for everything. Not leave stuff to chance and improvization. Improvization is done when necessary, but crazy preparedness is how our US military trains so they can deal with just about any situation. |
Re: starships underwater.
That's not the JJprise rising from underwater. It looks totally different. It's a different ship, or I need new glasses.
The JJprise does appear to be splashing down in one scene though. |

Re: starships underwater.
The first few times I watched it, I thought the nacelles of the 'rising-from-the-water' vessel did not look right for the Enterprise, but then I grabbed my model for comparison and -in watching the video again- I think it IS either Enterprise or a ship of the same class. I just can not make out any lettering beyond "NCC"... so I'll have to take Festivus Toad's word for it!

The ship rising looks nothing at all like the Enterprise nor is the registry visible after NCC part. This scene is around the middle of the trailer. The ship "crashing down" has the exact silhouette of the Enterprise. This scene is toward the end of the trailer. |
Re: starships underwater.
It's possible the rising ship is either the Enterprise, and what's visible is only the nacelles (the back first and then the bulkier front ends, followed by what looks like part of the saucer just before the switch), that both views are the Enterprise or they're both a new ship that looks similar but is a different class. Kind of doubtful they'd include that in the trailer unless the villain is associated with Starfleet, but you never know. :p I couldn't see a registry, only NCC on the nacelle.

The JJ-verse ships should be able to do the same, IMO. |

Re: starships underwater.
After re-examining the image and comparing the nacelle at Ex-Astris-Scientia, where he has a graphic of the starboard profile, I agree with others that the ship is the Enterprise. Now, what is that ship doing in the water? Whatever reason the ship is in the water, the moment that it rises out of the water may be one of the highlights of the film.
