Audrey Faith Perry grew up near Jackson, Mississippi, along with her two older brothers by adoptive parents Pat and Edna Perry. Her first singing experience came as a child in her family's Baptist church. As a young teenager, Hill learned to play guitar, and by age 16 she had started her own country band that played at a number of local fairs and rodeos. After graduating from high school in 1986, Hill spent a year in community college before moving to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue her love of music. Hill worked as a receptionist at a music publishing company before landing a job packaging fan merchandise for Reba McEntire. She married songwriter and music publishing executive Daniel Hill in 1988. Hill's professional breakthrough came when she was spotted by Martha Sharp, a talent scout from the Warner/Reprise recording company, while singing back-up for Gary Burr in the Bluebird Café, a popular Nashville bar. Her marriage to Daniel hill ended in divorce in 1994. In the spring of 1996, she began a joint tour with Tim McGraw and they got married that October.

Academy Award winner John Williams composed the instrumental theme music for NBC Sunday Night Football. For Super Bowl XLIII, NBC commissioned Joel Beckerman of Man Made Music to create new instrumental cues adding techno and rock elements around the main brass melody. These cues replaced the original Williams arrangements full-time at the start of the 2009 season. Pink sang the theme song for the broadcast in 2006, a reworking of the Joan Jett song "I Hate Myself for Loving You" retitled "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night." Alternate versions of the song are used throughout the season, substituting different lyrics depending on the teams playing. In 2007, Faith Hill replaced Pink in 2007 with a new arrangement.
