Blurbs for the 2013 TOS novels

The Simon and Schuster online catalogue has been updated with the first blurbs for the four TOS novels coming in 2013:

Allegiance in Exile, by David R. George III
Quote:

After a particularly horrifying experience, Captain James T. Kirk starts down the path toward something he believes he might regret for the rest of his days: accepting a commission as an admiral working at Starfleet Headquarters on Earth, far removed from the mysteries and adventures of deep-space exploration. Knowing that the Enterprise’s five-year mission is coming to an end and not wanting to forever be a wandering soul, Kirk must decide if this promotion is worthy of his true destiny or merely a temporary lapse in judgment....

Devil's Bargain
, by Tony Daniel
Quote:

Captain James T. Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise are sent to evacuate the Federation mining colony Vesbius, a frontier settlement that is on the brink of an extinction-level event, threatening the lives of all the colonists and the disruption of ore production vital to Starfleet. However, the colonists refuse to abandon this settlement, not wanting to leave their claims. It is after these irrational decisions that Spock suggests that perhaps an unexpected ally could aid the colony and help complete the mission....
The Weight of Worlds, by Greg Cox
Quote:

Kirk, Spock, and Sulu must protect the remote Federation colony of Ephrata from the dreaded Coven—beings from another galaxy who are seeking starships much like the Enterprise to spread from world to world, opening gateways between dimensions to eventually conquer the entire Federation.
The Folded World, by Jeff Mariotte
Quote:

En route to a diplomatic mission, the Enterprise receives a distress call from the USS McRaven. As the Enterprise approaches the area where the McRaven appears to be, the crew encounters an anomoly unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. Space itself seems inconsistent—warping, changing appearance. But during the brief periods of calm, they locate the McRave—along with other ships of various origins, all tightly surrounding and being held in place by an enormous unidentified vessel....

Allegiance in Exile kinda sounds like stuff we've already had - I'm sure there'll be a new spin on it but not too interested from that.

Devil's Bargain sounds meh. double meh if it's the klingons or the romulans in "unexpected ally" status.

The Weight of Worlds & The Folded World both have interesting premises.

That last one sounds right up my alley. I already love the title, too.

Here's hoping the two new writers find their way to our board's shores soon! I wonder if it would be all too forward to contact and invite them? (Assuming they have websites.)

Edit: Whoops, one new writer! I forgot about Jeff Mariotte's Lost Era novel, Deny Thy Father!

Okay, that blurb for my book is based on an old draft of the outline. There is no "Coven" in the actual book.

My thoughts exactly. I'd only add that Weight of Worlds sounds a bit more exciting to me with it's extra-galacticness and "gateways". While The Folded World at this first glance sounds rather like The Time Trap, Elite Force, etc.

Still something as exotic as described above though I hope?

FWIW, I fired off messages to Mr. Daniel and Mr. Mariotte, pointing them at the sub-forum and this thread, politely inviting them to pay us a visit.

Tony Daniel is, but as Sho posted earlier; Jeff Mariotte has previously written the Lost Era novel Deny Thy Father.

At least it doesn't look like it's too full of TOS...

Pass, buy (Horta?), buy, maybe.

TOS-heavy few months right before the movie premier is good, I think. Those books will all be on shelves after it hits, so people will have plenty of books to buy.

But I'm a pretty big 24th century cheerleader, and the year from Children of the Storm to Plagues of Night was a really long year. I hope we get some more of that stuff in the summer and fall next year.

Nailed it. Though I'll probably pick up DRGIII's novel based on him alone.

Yeah I'll pretty much buy anything DRG3 writes at this point.

I'll wait on reviews for the other 3; TOS isn't usually my favorite.

They all sound pretty good, but it's still early to decide if they are definite buys for me.
