Of course I also seriously doubted that they would drop Wally West for a guy who died 3 years before I was born and has been dead for the vast majority of my life. So there might be hope for that. |

No courtesy. I'm glad Marvel never resorted to that shit. They even have the Ultimate universe to replace 616 with. Did they do it? Shit no! Marvel had the courtesy to give their fans a fuckin' choice between 616 and Ultimate. DC is just rude! Rude, rude rude! :vulcan: |

If the sales start to slip, of course the company will do something else new again. There is no virtue to returning to something that wasn't working for them commercially to begin with. The interesting thing about the relaunch being done as it was is that if they want to bring back any particular character or element that was really significant - say, getting Lois and Clark married - they can just go ahead and do it. There's no need to "return" to any oldDC status quo. No sign of Superman's Speedo on the horizon, of course. ;) |
Re: When is DC's The New 52 going to revert back to the original unive
Define "the original universe." DC has reinvented its continuity many times over the decades -- in the '60s when they launched the Silver Age with new versions of the original characters (and then revealed that the previous versions still lived on the alternate Earth-2), in the '80s with Crisis on Infinite Earths, in the '90s with Zero Hour, and at least two more times since then (and that's not counting reboots that didn't take, like Superman: Birthright).
They've never "reverted" to an earlier version of the continuity per se, though generally ideas that were cast aside in the last reboot eventually worm their way back into the new continuity (or the next reboot after that) as fans who grew up with a certain era of comics become comics creators themselves and reintroduce the stuff they liked. So the stuff you liked before will probably get reintroduced eventually in some form, though it may take a decade or two. (Or maybe less. I fully expect that what the New 52 Wonder Woman comic has established about the Amazons' rather brutal secret history is going to be retconned away as a deception once a new writer takes over the series. It's a grand tradition in comics for new writers to negate the choices of previous writers, often by concocting very elaborate retcons and plot twists.) |
Re: When is DC's The New 52 going to revert back to the original unive
^ I suspect the Amazon's backstory will be retconned away before a new writer takes over; or in other words, it will be revealed as a partial truth at best.
But I agree with the points above, and offer "Krypto" as proof. If a super-dog from space can survive the excision of the Silver Age, then anybody and anything can survive any reboot. |
