Awesome. This won't be a Comic-Con exclusive, will it?

EDIT: Available elsewhere August 2nd. Cool.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

My reactions:

"Ooh, 'Haven'! Some really good romantic music from McCarthy, back when he was free to do real themes and not just wallpaper. I'd like to have that."

Scan, scan, scan...

"Ooh, 'Darmok'! Ohh, the music where Picard tells the Gilgamesh story is so beautiful. Oh, and some 'Inner Light' cues too, okay. But didn't we already get the bulk of that on that Best of album?"

Scan, scan, scan...

"Fred Steiner's 'Code of Honor'? OOOOOOOHHHHHH! Yes, yes, yes, at long, long last!!!"

I've always hoped Steiner's sole TNG score would come to CD, and there are some other must-haves too. And at only 3 discs, it should be rather more affordable than the Ron Jones set.

Now, if only they would finish releasing the rest of Steiner's TOS scores. And, for that matter, all the TOS scores that remain unreleased.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

I think the "Best of" release only included a symphonic version of the theme from "The Inner Light," not any of the episodes' actual score itself. IIRC.

I would love to get my hands on the rest of the TOS scores, too. Right after I round up enough money for the Ron Jones box set.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

I neglected to mention, I'm glad to be getting the John Debney and Don Davis TNG scores as well. They're both strong composers. (And I'm glad George Romanis's disappointing score to "Too Short a Season" is not included.)

I hope eventually we get a release of some of Paul Baillargeon's stuff from DS9/VGR/ENT. He did some interesting work, and I think he's the only regular composer from the later Trek series who hasn't had a soundtrack release yet.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

As soon as possible, I will be pre-ordering this!

Reactions:
* Good to see lots of Season 1 McCarthy. Looking forward to lots of good Courage fanfare from "Haven," and action cues from "Conspiracy."
* I also can't wait to have the "The Child" intro cue in the clear!
* I hope that the parts from "The Survivors" includes one of the battle scenes.
* All of "Code of Honor!" EPIC WIN!
* Even the bumpers? Nice.

And, I agree, Christopher--it would be nice to have some of Baillargeon's music as well.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

So the scores aren't all complete? I guess I was spoiled by the Ron Jones set. Very glad to see "Haven" and "Code of Honor" represented. There's a nice selection though, early McCarthy and Chattaway stuff was the best. And the price is pretty reasonable and won't scare away potential buyers like the massive Jones set did.

And I kind of like some of the music from "Too Short a Season", I wouldn't mind seeing that show up on a future release.

Re: La-La Land Records Releasing a 3-CD Set of TNG Scores at Comic-Con

It's strange to see the love of "Code of Honor"s music here, mostly since I can't stand that episode.

I guess I'm more like Berman in the regard that music doesn't make or break the episode. Good music won't elevate a crappy episode for me, and bad music won't derail a good episode. Sonic wallpaper is all I need.

Interesting is an apt euphemism to describe Baillargeon's work. I have to admit that I strongly dislike his scores - it's like he goes out of his way to have the music be tuneless and jarring. My wife, who is a decent musician, describes his work as "throwing random notes at sheets of music".

Every once in a while, his music thankfully introduced motifs (the final seconds of DS9's The Muse, The Siege of AR-558, VOY's Blink of an Eye), but most of the time he falls back on just being random. His final work on Enterprise (Demons) was every bit as odd as his debut episode Shakaar.

Now, if we could get some David Bell on CD... (Apart from Bride of Chaotica!, which was released on some best-of CD more than a decade ago. Owing to the nature of the episode, this was more like a collection of source music than an actual soundtrack.)

Nice to see more TNG music coming out. Would still very mutchl like to have more DS9 music though.

It will be interesting to see if LALA Land have any more trek releases to announce in the near future. They refer to this as Vol 1 so it seams likely that at the very least there will be more TNG sets.

I think, given enough time, we're going to see pretty much everything released eventually. It's the golden age for Trek music fans!
