WOLVERINE director search down to 8

Quote:

Since Darren Aronofsky departed the comic book sequel earlier this year, 20th Century Fox's The Wolverine has been without a director. Now, Variety claims to know the studio short list for directing candidates. The current options are said to be:

Jose Padilha (Elite Squad, the upcoming RoboCop reboot, the just-announced Tri-Border.)
Doug Liman (Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Identity)
Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Brooklyn's Finest)
Mark Romanek (One Hour Photo, Never Let Me Go)
Justin Lin (Fast Five, Better Luck Tomorrow)
Gavin O'Connor (Miracle, Pride and Glory)
James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma)
Gary Shore (primarily television commercials)

"We need to find another director and once we've found that, we'll be able to know," Jackman said, "It's too early to call on Japan, I'm not sure where they're at, so now we're finding another director, but Fox is very anxious to make the movie and we're moving ahead full steam to find another director."

Too bad Darren Aronofsky took off.

Out of that list, I think Justin Lin or Doug Liman would be good as the new director.

I guess they couldn't get David Slade after all. Fuqua, Liman, or Mangold would be interesting. They should get Gavin O'Connor for shits and giggles. The tale of two Galvins!

I thought Justin Lin was going to have his hands full with Terminator 5.

I'm leaning towards Liman. Yeah, Jumper sucked but I loved The Bourne Identity and Mr. & Mrs. Smith is pretty fun.

Of course, by the time they finish sifting through all the others, Arronofsky might be available again.

The only appropriate director on that list is Mark Romanek.

Schwarzenegger announced that he was talking a break from acting for personal reasons. I'm not sure when or if Terminator 5 is going to ever get off the ground.

Maybe if we get lucky.:rommie:

It's like when they were casting James Bond for The Living Daylights. They originally wanted Timothy Dalton but he was busy doing Brenda Starr, so they cast Pierce Brosnan. Then NBC suddenly announced that they were doing another season of Remington Steele, yanking Brosnan away at the last minute. By the time the production team got their bearings again, Dalton had finished Brenda Starr and was once again available.

Thats a good point. Romanek has more of a similar art house style with Aronofsky than the others do. One Hour Photo was probably the only thing I've seen of his and it was very atmospheric.

Antoine Fuquawould be an interesting choice.

So, those directors seem to suggest to me they are looking for more of a Gritty War or Spy adventure atmosphere approach, rather than the Fantasy, over the top-ness of XO:Wolverine

At least the movies listed to represent their work suggest that to me.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind James Mangold, either.

Apparently Gary Shore already directed a short film entitled Wolverine vs. the Hand. It looks like he might have been interested in doing something like this for a while, but I think FOX will want someone with more experience with big budget movies after the failure with Gavin Hood and X-men Orgins: Wolverine.

Kind of cool, but it was pretty much an After Effects exhibition. Didn't really show any skills of direction. Actually kind of reminds me of this Halo commercial.

Can't say I particularly care for this list. Lin is fine for big dumb action movies but I was hoping for something more from this. Liman hasn't done much of note since Bourne, a decade ago. Fuqua is a hack, albeit a competent one. Mangold isn't bad and I liked Romanek's One Hour Photo. I don't really know much about the rest.

Damn. I knew I should have made that Wolverine fan movie when I had the chance.

If this guy is being considered because of that...Fox seriously needs to look at how hated Rothman is, because that's who they have to settle for because no one else of merit is willing to be under his shitheel?

Holy crap...that video isn't even that good. Christ Fox, what's wrong with you?
