This anime entry into the Tolkien saga is based on three pages of the Return of the King appendix and follows the 9th King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand. It is set to release on December 13th 2024.

The story is set 200 years before the Lord of the Rings and is narrated by Miranda Otto, reprising her role as Eowyn.

The executive producer is Lord of the Rings screenwriter Philippa Boyens, who is interviewed here by YouTube channel Nerd of the Rings.

They're joined about halfway through by the movies screenwriters, Phoebe Gittens and Kenji Kamiyama.

The appendices offer a lot of great material to mine for animated releases, but I really hope that they are somehow able to get into the stories from the Unfinished Tales book. The Rohan story that I would really love to see realized is the origins of Rohan, the tale of Cirion and Eorl.

I've been looking forward to this film since its announcement, but especially after the news that Miranda Otto would be narrating as Eowyn. Having Philippa Boyens directly involved with the production also helps.

One thing you forgot to mention: Brian Cox will be voicing the lead character, Helm Hammerhead.

(You left out the first "i" in Rohirrim in your title)

I did forget that, and I can't believe that I did. Philippa Boyens has nothing but praise for his performance in the interview saying that his casting was perfect.

I like that they're making Helm's unnamed daughter (named "Hera" here, but not pronounced like the Greek goddess), who was at the center of the story at the very beginning and then essentially forgotten, the emotional core of the story. It's the one character that they can develop and do something creative and new with that doesn't upset the canon.

A little research shows that Phoebe Gettens is Philip Boyen's daughter and had a small role in The Hobbit.

RE: the title. I have put in a request for correction.

It did, unfortunately, get pushed back. But then, December release seems to be traditional for Tolkien inspired cinema.

Not a surprise. He's always so damn good.

Not sure when I'll have the time to listen to the interview but that's fantastic to read. Tolkien was great at many things, but aside from Eowyn, he was pretty weak on female characters.

For once a film delay is a blessing in disguise. Or at least I choose to look at it that way.

There are a lot of tantalizing hints offered up in this interview, which is not exclusively about War of the Rohirrim. Boyens offers stories and anecdotes about the productions of The Lord of the Rings movies, The Hobbit movies, Peter Jackson and even Stephen Colbert among other things.

I'm definitely curious about this one, love LOTR, and I like the idea of taking a deeper dive into the Rohirrim. Miranda Otto and Brian Cox's involvement is a big plus too.

Out of curiosity what qualifies this as anime instead of just a general animated movie?

It's produced by Japanese studio and I'm assuming it'll be done in an anime style.

It seems a bit ridiculous to do a movie like this, but at this point I'm all for any Fantasy Movie (or TV) stuff that isn't grimdark GOT style junk or generic YA trash. Just like with Rings of Power even bad Tolkien adjacent stuff is better then 90% of any other Fantasy stuff, and there is no reason that this movie can't be at least be decent.

I would think he has to be. Sad the film is probably 15 or moreso years too late for Vigo.

    They could de-age him.

At least this one's looks like it's live action, not bloody animated.

I don't know, I'm think it would probably be easier to just go for a younger actor. I know they're getting better at the deaging, but most of it has still been just for a small portion of the movie, and I have a feeling Aragorn is probably going to be big part of this, and I can't imagine them deaging Vigo Mortensen for the entire movie.
You have a problem with animation?
As for The Hunt for Gollum, I'm very intrigued.
