Star Trek: The Wrath of Moll

Moll: No! ...No! You can't get away. ...From Hell's heart, ...I stab at thee. For hate's sake I spit my last breath ...at thee.

Rayner: Oh no, Moll's activated the Progenitor weapon. I will now go into the radioactive room in engineering to heroically sacrifice myself to restore power to Discovery.

Burnham: What? I've never even heard of such a room! You just made that one up didn't you?

Rayner: You don't even know how your own stepbrother died?

Burnham: He mysteriously disappeared after trying to turn Romulus' sun into a black hole?

    Rayner: No the other time.

Culber: Let me guess, he was killed by a Klingon and then had his body cradled by someone connected to the mycelial network. Or are you talking about her other stepbrother who was killed by God?

    Rayner: :sigh:

This shouldn't make me laugh as hard as it did.

L'ak is only dead till they find the Progenitor Device.

They practically spelled that out in this very episode.

Might make 2 seasons in a row where they have a resurrection.

Remind me, who was resurrected last season?

Didn't like this episode much because it's really hard to care about the Breen. The best I can say is that Moll and L'ak are more interesting than Changeling and Borg Queen in Picard, but that's such a low bar.

They needed better villains or no villains at all.

I had forgotten. I actually liked Season 4 by quite a bit. I was trying to remember if Tarka died and was brought back somehow?

Ehh I had a good time. Nice to see T'Rina get to do some stuff, Breen were cool, dreadnought was cool, love to see Reno.

All these episodes so far have been pretty average to above average for me. Nothing as good as I thought last season's "The Galactic Barrier" was but nothing as bad as I thought last season's "Choose to Live" was.

I liked the political game of brinksmanship, and T'Rina knowing exactly what the Breen said was great.

I guess some things never change in STAR TREK... such as security being REALLY bad at keeping prisoners from escaping. There was no need to keep Moll with L'ak in Sickbay. She should have been in the brig while he was being treated. This supremely stupid maneuver not only got them a way to attempt an escape, but it got L'ak killed, AND Moll in the hands of the Breen, who will now be after the Progenitors' technology.

And there was no reason for her to be next to him all the time... we saw them be separate for a while only a couple episodes ago, and no ill effects occured because of it. All these centuries, and Starfleet security is actually WORSE than the 24th century.

Speaking of the escape attempt, I hated the fight scene. It was hard to follow with all the cuts and weird angles. It was more of a headache than enjoyment.

Four straight episodes without Saru... and absent from one where he really should have been in. At least we have Rayner, who has been an excellent character since his introduction. And it was good to get more background on Rayner. His upbringing certainly sheds light on who he is.

I love all the callbacks to DS9... not only the Breen, but Rayner remembering the Romulan saying about Breen from "BY INFERNO'S LIGHT", the Badlands, and Moll mentioning Bopak III, which was where "HIPPOCRATIC OATH" occured. DS9 callbacks and love always meets my approval. (And helps an episode's overall score.)

The Breen dreadnought is HUGE... and I'm sorry to say, it doesn't work for me. It looked as massive as a Borg cube, or the Voth city ship. I think a somewhat smaller, meaner looking design would have been better... and one that could have at least seemed different. (One of the things I loved about the Breen ships in DS9 was how unique and odd they looked. The dreadnought just seemed too... generic.)

Speaking of that situation, I thought Federation HQ could warp? Why was it stuck there, waiting for other Starfleet ships to arrive? It feels like DISCO ignores its own history and episodes often.

Unfortunately, it seems quite clear that L'ak will be brought back from death using the Progenitors' technology. I say unfortunate because the ending of that story is telegraphed from a mile away... though I'd like to be proven wrong. This seems to be a recurring problem with many episodes this season... predictability. It makes the episodes a bit less enjoyable.

This was an improvement from last week, but not as great an improvement as I was hoping for. I'll give this a 7, because the numerous DS9 callbacks always help an episode.

You're right. The Burn's cause is the single dumbest decision the writers did for DISCO.

Literally the only thing the 32nd Century has shown itself to be better at is technological portability.

    So this shouldn't surprise you.

It feels like Discovery ignores it's own history and episodes often because it does.

Their whole writing style can be summed up with the words "this thing happens because we say it does".

No, that would be the Burn itself.

The cause of the Burn would be the second dumbest decision of the Discovery writers.

Disputing the dumbest decision of Disco's writers? Oh boy.

I'd focus on the show's smart decisions - much more compact and manageable.

Trek's very nature is "this is in the story because we thought it would be neat." That spans all 58 years of the franchise.

Looks like I didn't miss much. And I don't mean Discovery. I mean the thread.

I could cut-and-paste a post from five years ago, maybe even 20 years ago if I change the names, and no one would know the difference.
