Well, you know, when TOS aired in my country TV long years ago, I decided that Sulu was my favorite character. You know, maybe because of my sentimental thought back then, as both of us were fellow Asian. But the problem is, I always think that Sulu had so little role in the series. I can even say that he the most background of background character in TOS. as he had little role in every episode that I watched. Well, maybe he wasn't, as the TV in my country didn't air TOS episodes in good manner. They tend to repeat the episodes that had been aired before. So I couldn't even find Chekov during my TOS watch time long time ago.

The point is, as far as I remember, Mr. Sulu dialog was mostly "Aye Sir!" after got ordered by Kirk to bring the Enterprise somewhere. He didn't even complain when he thought that the order sound absurd.

And I had some hope when John Cho came to the movie in 2009. What can be wrong with a comedy actor like Mr. Cho can bring to Sulu character. And he did really gave me some hope with his little comedy act and did fencing against some Romulan in the movie. But later on, in the sequels, he returned to become the glorious background character again, with so little dialog in the movie. Despite he showed us some heroic skill by piloting the Enterprise against the odd.

So I guess Mr. Sulu is a quiet but boring type person. Even a comedy actor like John Cho make his face like a frustrated Japanese man. How can make this character to be interesting and fun to watch? To have a gay love story like Stamet? Or to make his quiet character to be funny? I don't know.

Explore his interests in astrophysics and botany. Establish that he had a career pre-Starfleet and why he joined up. Maybe fulfilling a dead friend/sibling's dream because they can't anymore?

Just let these people do their jobs. They made Chapel interesting.

An expert in various historical ships, firearms, and events, along with family history?

An expert in fencing and various self defense martial arts?

A botanist unfamiliar with rural life, despite growing up on colonies?

A close friendship with Uhura that could be elaborated on further?

An astrophysicist that eventually pilots the Enterprise, and was also qualified to become the weapons officer? And ambitious enough to get his own command?

Maybe Sulu’s just naturally introverted, which makes him interesting in a different way?

His relationship with the woman that eventually becomes the mother of his daughter? And Sulu pushing himself to make the time for her?

Maybe there’s a friendship with Sam Kirk that could be explored, since they are both in the sciences division in this period?

Sulu has enough going on to be an interesting character on SNW.

Maybe just... don't. We have Kirk, Scotty, Spock, and Uhura. That's enough TOS characters for now.

Well, I was also hope that Sulu would be an interesting character in Star Trek 2009 series, because he was played by John Cho, a comedy actor who was succeed with his Harlord and Kumar movie. And he did deliver some fun in the first movie. But in the sequel, he return to become a boring character again.

Have him come on board as a science officer in training, but then bond with Erica over his side hobby of piloting all sorts of vehicles.
He admires her and she discovers that he is a prodigy in flying starships eventually leading to her lobbying to take over her job when she eventually moves on.

If the writers plan on bringing Sulu into the show, it'll be because they have an idea in mind to make him interesting and whatever we post in this thread won't influence the matter for them at all.

    Yep.

I'd rather be surprised by these people than try to anticipate them. So far it's working out real well.

Well, ST’09 was designed to be fun. And its sequel was more serious in tone. John Cho’s Sulu reflected both.

Sulu’s persona would likely depend on the tone of the SNW episode he would be in.

Thank you. and let's scratch off the "at least as regulars." Reads better without that bit. ;)

    Scotty to.. :ouch:

Sulu, and maybe Checkov are the only ones left. Maybe they rescue Checkov as a teen and he gets inspired to join?

For Sulu, yeah, maybe low key integrate him to the ship, show an asian man in a blue tunic in the background, maybe attend a meeting, but pay him no mind untill maybe an away mission and he gets called up and we'll be like, HE was Sulu?

Well my post isn't referring to just the core TOS characters, but also one off characters from TOS.

Like I'm almost certain we'll see Dr. Korby before he goes missing.

Guys like Korby, sure. Don't care about that. What I'm irritated about is that now, on 'Pike's' Enterprise, we have Uhura, Spock, Chapel, M'Benga, Scotty, and the almost semi-permanent presence of James T. Kirk. Sulu and McCoy almost seem like foregone conclusions at this point.

Spock is the only one of the above-listed characters who sort of 'had' to be there.

Regarding McCoy, what do you want to bet we'd meet Joanna and her mysterious mother first?
