"Strange love a star woman teaches." Uh, what? Since when does love have to be taught?

Was Gene using "strange love" as the code for exotic [physical] positions? In 1966? For a TV show?

Alexander Courage said that Gene being a sex maniac is why Gene insisted on putting the female soprano in loud and up front in the titles, instead of keeping the vocal subtle, as Courage wanted it.

I guess it all tracks. But I do like the soprano up front.

His TMP novelization had Kirk named after his mother's 'love instructor'.

I suppose it's the equivalent of "What is this thing you call a kiss?". Except humans are the ones who don't know what a "kiss" is.

I wouldn't read too much into the meaning of Roddenberry's lyrics, unless that meaning is "I need me some of that sweet, sweet composer's royalty money."

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have the life of Gene. The life of Gene.

It does and it doesn't. Love is a foundational human emotion and state, but the art of expressing it, through word, deed, or commitment requires a bit of learning. In my opinion, a life time of learning to love someone in those aspects, though I doubt all feel that way.

A lot of people could use more education about love and sex IMO.

And relationships. The amount of insincerity, and struggle to communicate genuine needs staggers me when I encounter people in relationship, especially in adults. It goes to this idea that somehow people should "just know" that they love them, or care about them, or how to tell them what they need. I've heard grown adults tell their children "I don't need to tell you that I love you." What? To me, that's fundamental, but to that adult that is their experience. You don't do that.

One of the biggest reasons I believe in a commitment for a lifetime is because getting to know and move past poorly taught aspects of love and sex, especially from popular culture, takes that time to actually get to know someone, what they like, dislike, what they appreciate, and find annoying. It requires learning.

IIRC, Roddenberry didn't write the lyrics in 1966, but years after the series was over. And yeah, it was just a cash grab.

He wrote them at some point during the first two seasons, because the lyrics were printed in Stephen Whitfield's The Making of Star Trek.

Oh, that's right. That's why Courage didn't come back to score any episodes. Thanks for the correction!

He did score a couple during the third season; according to Memory Alpha's article, he did those as a courtesy to Bob Justman, and by that point Roddenberry had more or less checked out.

    Did someone say "strange love"?

Actually I thought it was just a euphemism for kinky sex.

I think it just sounded good lyrically and thematically.

This all brings ''intimacy coordinators'' into an entirely new light.
