    Thoughts on this episode...

...did that just really happen? No, not in a good way...the opening bits in the church with the archbishop struck the right chords, what with the crosses turning upside down, but as soon as they went to the President storyline this episode lost me.

When the Secret Service descended on the Impala, I thought, "Okay, so all season we've been hearing about an 'angry, powerful' Castiel, maybe now we FINALLY get to see him in action like we used to." Nope, Dean stopped him, when in season 6 he would've just used a blast of light from his hands to incapacitate everyone nearby. Likewise at the very end--I was shocked when he ran out with Kelly but then left the Winchesters on their own. Granted in the old days he would've just zapped back to get them, which he can't do anymore without wings, but still...unleash your angel badassery or just go back to Heaven already.

And speaking of angel wings, as much as I get why Lucifer would have them and Cas wouldn't, it doesn't make sense to me that Lucifer seems a lot less powerful now than he did last year. The excuse that "Amara really took it out of him" just doesn't fly--all she did was expel him from Cas, I don't see that she did anything else that would've de-powered him.

Then we get to the infamous egg scene. I don't buy that Lucifer was banished anywhere--remember the demon exorcisms we used to see, they'd dissolve right through the floor and leave burn marks behind them. The only time they went through a vent was if they were fleeing the scene--and that's exactly what I saw happening with Lucifer in his angelic form, fleeing through a convenient escape tunnel and *not* being banished back to Hell, much less the Cage.

Now...let's talk about Cas again. I get that he can't be too powerful or the story loses jeopardy, but I echo another reviewer on another site who wanted the narrative to at least try to explain why his wings are still burned out, since he didn't fall with the rest of the angels. It still drives me crazy that Crowley (and Lucifer) can teleport, but not him; it also drives me crazy that his power level seems to be sharply uneven from one sighting to the next. At least in seasons 4, 5, and 6, they managed to keep it very consistent about what he could and couldn't (not to mention would and wouldn't) do. Is he a seraph again or not? (And can we PLEASE finally find a way to reverse Metatron's spell and give the angels back their wings?)

Yes, I still miss his being able to teleport and all the other things that wings made possible--but losing those powers at least makes sense. It's all these one-off abilities that seem to come out of nowhere that bother me. As an example, season before last, he probed Rowena's memories to learn about the Polish kid that she supposedly loved; we'd never seen that before, and it was literally new powers as the plot demanded. Then in this season's midseason cliffhanger, since he couldn't just incapacitate the Secret Service at the motel (since that would tip off Lucifer and he'd just zap away), he instead...uses mind control? Again, where did this come from? Have we seen it before? (Yes I know Zaccariah did it to Dean in that one episode when he created a false world to show Dean he really was a hunter, but that was more about putting his memories on "layaway" as I recall.)

About the only thing this episode really did right was bring in Matthew Kellogg (or at least the actor who played him on "Continuum"). It was a tad jarring to see him as a Secret Service guy when I'm used to seeing him as a master manipulator/social engineer, but I'm actually looking forward to what he'll bring to the second half of the season.

Who do you think Lucy's new host is? It was all in the look he gave them as they were ushered into the truck at the end.

I really, REALLY hope you're right. I had the same thought, but without the telltale red glow we've seen until now I don't know...several different directions they could go now. Matthew Kellogg as Lucifer would be a VERY nifty twist though.

I wouldn't have minded the President Lucifer story running a few more episodes.

Haven't seen an episode of season 12 yet, as we in germany are still stuck in season 10 in public tv and as far as i know maybe season 11 in pay tv. Therefore i don't mind spoilers for the new episodes.

From what i have read, i know that Mary's back from death. I don't know but i have got a hunch that maybe John will come back, too. Maybe in the christmas episode?

Several sites claimed he would appear, but sadly not. The showrunners have been driving the fandom wild with assurances that Jeffrey Dean Morgan's stint on Walking Dead wouldn't compromise his ability to fill a guest spot on Supernatural, but it doesn't seem to be in the cards.

That was a very generic white dude as President. What...there were no orange colored actors they could've cast?

David Chisum could be Tim Guinee's clone.

I agree about Mary. I really hope they don't send her back to Heaven. I want her to come to terms with things and become a permanent part of the team.

You'd think being "ejected" from Heaven would be even more of (or at least equal to) a psychological hit than from going to Hell. It's disappointing that they're not playing up that angle at all with Mary.

    Kind of like on Buffy?
My memory of the mid-season finale is already fading, but I do remember that I was pretty happy overall.
The stuff with Lucifer in the President was pretty good, and gave us an interesting set up with his girlfriend now pregnant.
It was nice to finally get to meet Mr. Ketch.

I was kind of assuming that her memories of Heaven were vague, at best, like waking from a dream.

I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but...I've been getting frustrated at the fact that the writers don't seem inclined to touch the idea of the angels getting their wings back, and the story complications that arise from that. I've decided to take it on myself, with a plausible story that hits the actual mythology. I'm far more adept at sci-fi writing than SPN, but I still thought I'd share what I have: link to Part 1 on DeviantArt

I don't want to derail this topic but if anyone's interested or just likes to read, Part 1 is up on DeviantArt for you to look at. In the interests of keeping this thread on topic, I'd ask that any discussion take place on DA.

^I do think the writers missed a prime opportunity to get the angel storylines moving again. The afterlife needs a major over-haul.

NO comments about last night's show?...alright, I'll start.

    Worst. Midseason premiere. Ever.

The midseason finale wasn't exactly a showstopper--let's face it, it was way too goofy--but then they went and made it worse with this as the followup. Sorry gang, but season 12 ambled through its first half without ever finding its footing, and the second half isn't off to a great start.

Part of it is that this felt too much like an episode of Prison Break, and not enough like Supernatural. I mean, thermal imaging satellites that the MoL can "borrow" when they need to? Why couldn't Cas see the heat signatures himself? I thought it was established that angels can see and sense all sorts of things, with heat being one of the most basic.

And then there's the whole business of where Sam and Dean where, and why they were so hard to find--whatever happened to angels being able to locate people? We've seen that enough times that it should've been the first thing they talked about. Shouldn't the boys have been praying to Cas to help? I kept waiting for him to say it when Dean was on the phone...but nope. C'mon guys, angels can't teleport right now and we get that, but that's no reason not to make use of an ability we saw as recently as season 10 (or maybe it was 11, I can't remember; that episode that ended with Cas talking to Claire while driving in his car).

Next week's show focuses on Castiel so I really hope we see this "badass, powerful, angry, warrior" Cas that they promised. Thus far, I'm not seeing much of anything impressive from this season.

I'm sure Cas could see their heat signatures. He just had no way to get into low earth orbit for that to be effective.

I suddenly have an image in my head of Crowley trying to get Castiel into a cannon.

I actually enjoyed last night's episode--I like the whole "stalking in the woods" thing.

Didn't mind that Cas killed Billie; she was starting to get on my nerves. I do, however, wish we'd get back to Cas and the angels actually being, you know, ANGELS. But I thought it got them out of that horrible situation in a fairly good way. I hope we can see the original Death again ---have him come back and be PISSED.
