After years of assuming she'd hate it, my wife recently took an independent interest in TOS without any prodding from me(I don't plead with people to watch things they don't want to), and now we've been watching them together. We're in the middle of season two, and there's so many subtle things she notices and comments on that I've simply taken for granted having grown up with these shows. It's interesting to witness someone viewing them objectively, for the first time. I can't wait until we get to "spock's brain."

How old is she? And do you think TOS has a better shot with people over a certain age than with today's young people?

We're both 39. As far as what age group TOS would resonate more with today, I guess it all depends on whether one is able to see the depth behind the campy melodrama and low-budget effects/costumes/sets, or even appreciate the charm of those superficial elements, as I do. I mean, it was already 20 years old when I started watching it as a kid, and people thought it was severely antiquated then. So I think it can speak to people of any age, if they're receptive to it.

Wish my wife liked it! I can't get any of my family to watch anything I like on television!

I think, for a 50 year old series, it holds up better than most other shows of the era for the most part. Styles are different, naturally: acting, pacing, music, lighting and so on. Fashion, technology and attitudes are way out of date. But when you drill down (and you don't have to go that far), there are a lot of things that still resonate today. It's also pretty damned fun of a series.

My wife always liked Trek. She's not as devoted a fan as I am, but she will do cons, watch episodes, go to the movies and totally supports my Trek buying habits. She happily put on a custom made original series uniform for Halloween. Luckily, my whole family got into it as I was growing up (I take full credit for that). It's be a good life of Trek.

My wife doesn't like TOS. Nonetheless, when I showed her "The Menagerie Part 1" she made me show her Part 2 right away. She also liked "City on the Edge", "Amok Time", and "Tribbles". I think they all have universal appeal.

I consider TV shows and movies from that period to be timeless. That includes TOS. It transports me to strange new worlds in a way that the Trek spinoffs just aren't capable of.

We both enjoy old shows like twilight zone, outer limits etc so I knew she would like TOS but all she knew was the stereotypes. The dorky Star Trek fan, all that. I've really enjoyed watching with her and sharing something that's an integral part of my childhood and also feeling like I'm watching for the first time

"Campy melodrama"? Why, what on earth do you mean?

My wife started watching TOS with me a few months ago. I was surprised to say the least. She liked it and looks forward to watching it. Right now, we are watching the reruns on MeTV. I never got around to buying the series. I am going to see if she likes TNG next. One other mention...she loved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. She even cried when Spock died.

My girlfriend had seen the odd episode of Star Trek and had liked it but due to her family not being a fan, she never got a chance to see much of it. Also her ex-partners weren't fans neither so she didn't get much of a chance to watch it.

Now though, I'm enjoying rewatching Trek again and introducing someone to it all.

    You're sure it's still your wife? :D
I've recently watched the body-snatchers movies from the 50s and 70s and... you can never know.

I'm watching TOS again with my husband, the casual fan. He has seen it but it's been a while. We just finished 'This Side of Paradise'. He thinks what he calls 'beautiful woman music' is funny and cheesy. Look, a beautiful woman. Cue music...then we hear it and we lose it. We don't drink but we might start just so we can play along. He seems impatient for Chekov to show up for some reason....

Yes, we are going to watch the Animated Series after this.

    Anyway...I'm lucky I suppose.

I persuaded my wife and daughter to watch Star Trek IV with me the other week (my son bailed out after the first five minutes) but they both said they liked it! Strange how both my children have told me they don't like Trek, yet considering they haven't really seen it (my daughter watched TNGs The Child but walked out after twenty minutes and never came back) it's almost as if they've been programmed to dislike it I think!
