Ohh, ugh, they're using the damn Donner crystalline design yet again. I'm so sick of that version of Kryptonian tech -- I want to see something new. Or at least I want to see a proper Silver Age Fortress with a giant key only Superman can lift and lots of robots and science labs and halls full of creepy statues and souvenirs of Superman's friends.

I'm tired of it too, but my biggest problem with the Donner Fortress here is that it doesn't what we've seen of Supergirl's Krypton at all.

willing to bet that has budgetary reasons? They probably still had the set in storage somewhere from Smallville and it is familiar to the larger audience as Kryptonian. So easily saved money. If that saved money can go to other expensive stuff, it might be worth it.

 

Exactly. That's my other problem with it. It's inconsistent with this universe.

The Smallville set was a pretty exact recreation of the Donner design, while this is more a rough approximation.

 

The giant key was a cool idea back when he was the strongest dude around, but it would be pretty foolish in a world where other Kryptonians survived, plus other super-strong types. It'd be as bad as leaving it under the mat.

 

But that's why it's disguised as an air route marker. Although I don't think we still use those in the age of satellite navigation, so there'd have to be some other disguise.

I like the variant from All-Star Superman, where it's a normal-sized key that Superman keeps on his person, but it's ultra-dense so only he can lift or carry it.

Yeah that was my initial thought as well, but there's nothing to say that this Fortress was actually intended to be a recreation of Krypton. It could simply have been designed that way by Superman because he liked it and found it to be a relaxing environment. And it does have more of a natural "carved into the ice" look than the previous Fortresses had.

And in any case, it's still a lot more visually interesting than most of the Fortress designs I've seen in the comics, where it's basically just a huge cavern or room with a generic scifi design to it.

 

WB treats the Donner movies as the holy grail of Superman, and by extension so does this show.

It'd be nice if they'd quit referencing the films for the brunt of these characters and actually go to the real source material to see what they've done there. There's a reason the Deadpool movie is getting such rave reviews... and it's not because they "reimagined him for modern audiences" or referenced the atrocious reimagining of him from the Wolverine flick.

I really don't get what's so hard to understand about that when it comes to the films. Changing costumes a bit so they look better and/or more believable? Sure, that's perfectly fine. But ignoring the source material and just going back to old, rehashed material over and over again? Just bleh.

 

I really doubt the critics giving Deadpool good reviews are doing so because it's faithful to the source material (and most of them likely haven't even read the comic before anyway). The only reason they're praising it is because it's a fun and entertaining movie.

It's not like Deadpool is a 70 year old character that needed re-imagining. He's down right modern already.

I like the idea of visiting the Fortress of Solitude, but I do agree it is a little weird they're going back to the crystal design from the Donner movies, when that really doesn't fit with their Krypton.

I was thinking the other day about whether or not the Green Lantern Corps would work on SG. With the show so focused on aliens, it seems like it would be a great fit into the show, or at least a better fit than the (other) Arrowverse shows.

 

Yeah they'd probably work, but I get the impression the writers and producers want to stick fairly closely to characters in the Superman family on this show. Or characters that at least have some kind of history with Supergirl in the comics.

 

I realize it's probably unlikely, but it would still be cool. Although at this point the other shows have gotten into enough fantastic stuff, that I guess aliens wouldn't be totally out of the real of possibility at this point. We got King Shark

on Flash, and he's not really that much more ridiclous than the GL members.

 

Not exclusively. A number of the characters so far are more associated with the Justice League than with Superman specifically -- e.g. J'onn J'onzz, Maxwell Lord, and Red Tornado. Lord has never really been connected with Superman outside of Infinite Crisis. Jemm, Son of Saturn was originally the star of his own book, and often associated with the Martian Manhunter (as an ally rather than a villain). And of course the White Martians are J'onn's arch-enemies.

Although most of the other villains and guest characters we've seen have been Superman-related, it's true. I think the only villain we've had so far who was a Supergirl adversary to begin with was Reactron, who ironically was reinterpreted here as a former Superman foe.

As for the Green Lanterns, the Arrowverse has flirted with that mythos occasionally, referring to Ferris Air and Coast City on occasion, dropping a reference to a Ferris Air test pilot who disappeared a few years back, and showing a glimpse of Hal Jordan's flight jacket in a flashback. Which implies that they don't have permission to use the GLs openly, probably because the movie folks have plans for them. So we'd be unlikely to see them on Supergirl either.

 

Quarter of a century is nothing to sneeze at.
