Jadzia Dax. I don't care how hard the show shills her, I'm not buying the hype.

You articulated this better than I did. I love and hate him, too. The problem was the inconsistent writing. Bakula did a good job, in my humble opinion. I really like the show, but sometimes, I just want to hit Archer over the head with a spatula.

I am going with Jadzia. Yes I know she had all those memories but after a while her hyper experiences of having done just about everything got boring.

Of the characters on this list, Seven of Nine. Of Star Trek characters in general, Spock.

Data's a pretty great character often but too often the writers and actor present him without depth or with a lot less depth than he should have so unfortunately he wins this.

Edit: Kirk is also a bit overrated but not to such an extent and he mostly deserves his popularity.

The voting's closed but I'll go with Seven. When she arrived, VOY became all about her and the Doctor, and that got a bit annoying. I still don't get it why she has so many fans. I understand why hormonal fanboys love her, but other than that... I also thought it a shame that the writers allowed her to overshadow Janeway.

Now I have posted this a million times: I love all the ST characters, none of them I find dislikable in the slightest.

However, based purely on this poll, I must vote Archer. As someone who loves Janeway it may amuse some of you to hear me say: I think Archer is waaaaaaay to inconsistently written. Bakula is great and Archer 80% of the time is a nice dude.

But then the worst episode of the franchise happens [A Night in Sickbay] and he suddenly seems like an immature, petulant halfwit who is entirely out of his depth. He swings wildly from being Captain Cool to looking like a rabbit in headlights.

I think the problem stems from the writers wanting to make him admirable and strong like the other captains, but also trying to add a 'he is the first one to do this' rookie-ish-ness to him and for me...it sometimes doesn't work. We are told he is this wonderfully smart guy but a few too many times he goes to pieces in bizarre situations.

Any negative leaning poll about characters should always have Archer at the top.

I think that she retains many, many fans because she's a fine actress that very effectively portrayed an arc in personality development that was really very substantive. I've observed at times that the same behaviors and responses were part of her character for far too long, but that is attributable to the writers/show runners, as well her coming to dominate screen time can be laid at the feet of the latter. Still, aside from her general high level of performance, she turned in more than a few stunning portrayals, such as Infinite Regress and Body and Soul, among others.

I agree that she had her moments in the sun, but IMO the Trek franchise works best as an ensemble, whenever one or two characters get too dominant, you risk alienating everyone except those who really like those particular characters.

I'm not very familiar with VOY, but it seems to me that Seven filled the Spock role that other characters on the show didn't quite fit, either because their personalities didn't come with the right mix of repression and naivity, or because the actors weren't up to it.

I have no doubt that ANIS is bad but the worst? You mean there was something with less quality than TATV?

To me, ANIS is the absolute worst. Worse than Threshold, worse than Masks and yes, worse than TATV. TATV sucks but...I can at least see what they were trying to do [and they badly botched it]. Whereas ANIS is just character destroying nonsense from start to end: it isn't clever, it isn't funny and it makes Archer look like an immature, idiotic creep all at once.

Full disclosure: I never summoned the courage to watch ANIS. I can't get past my disbelief that someone would drool over his first officer while his dog is sick. To be fair, there is plenty of character destruction in TATV, mostly of Shran and Trip. But unlike all the other stinkers, at least we can dismiss it as a bad holonovel.

That's not the way it actually happened.
The problem with ANIS is the premise, and it's the same we saw in Brave New World - letting the dog wander on an alien planet. This is actually addressed in this episode: Enterprise sent Porthos's "specs" to the Easily Annoyed Aliens, and got permission to take him down with them. Therefore any negative consequences are really the aliens' fault.
Beyond that, this episode is really not supposed to be taken seriously. It's just a light comedy about Archer being sleep deprived in Phlox's bizarre menagerie. Being offended is really taking it the wrong way.

What's worse? Trump, Hitler, Hitler or Hitler.

I can't help but feel this thread is a !oaded question designed to gear the vote towards Seven. There were surely better candidates for the position of most over rated Trek character than what's on the list.

As for Seven, Ryan turned what was essentially a hairstyle and a pair of tits into one of the best characters on Voyager. She elevated the character from the tedious Trek staple of someone who wants to explore their humanity into something more complex, interesting and highly watchable. By the end, she had established herself as possibly the strongest character in the show (tits or no tits).

I know, you're not fond of the VOY novels, but Seven continues to shine and develop there. So she finally became one of my favorite characters.

I'm surprised as hell that Jadzia Dax (!!!) trails so closely in this poll. Not that there's really anything inherently wrong with being "overrated," per se, but I can't imagine DS9 without her. She was wonderful to behold, with a very sweet disposition, and always very knowledgeable. If anyone was overrated on that show it had to be Benjamin Sisko, what with his "Messiah" status (those poor Bajorans) and ability to knock Q on his ass, with one well-placed jab to the jaw. I mean, come on ... had Kathryn Janeway kneed Q in his balls, when he tried to seduce her, only to watch him crumple down onto the carpet, in pain, howling, "... my balls! My nuts!!! ... " and then blink out of existence, who'd really be surprised after that poor showing on DS9's promenade? No. That Jadzia Dax, she did alright ...

If this were still open I'd vote for 'give me back my girlfriend Enterprise' Kirk. All the other captains in Starfleet must be incompetent clods since they manage to get eaten by machines, land on planets and are turned stupid or crazy. When Earth needs saving only Kirk can do it, the others might as well not bother to turn up for work.
