Ahh...ya know, I wish those series which were shot in 16:9 and cropped for TV back then were done so with care not to have junk/people/lights in the frame. Hindsight is lovely. But even then, there would be lots of people who would object to the 16:9 versions being released because the director was originally only focused on the 4:3 crop. I get it, but I'd still be on team 16:9. BUT, moot point - junk in the frame, TNG already released anyway, DS9 doesn't look likely, yada yada.
A lot of the time there is still SOME useable width before the junk becomes visible. You could still crop a 16:9 ratio shot out of more than the original 4:3,. Also, a pretty standard package could remove some clutter fairly easily if time consumingly (a job for the intern !), giving more options. Adding CGI areas at the sides of the existing 4:3 is probably way too expensive/obvious for much other than space shots.
I'm sure when the dump truck full of money was driven to his house, he would've said, "Deep Space What?"
Well, Fuller is a DS9 guy, he doesnt care so much for the TNG style Trek, so there is no need for DS9 in HD, since the new Trek is going to be "DS9 2.0" ;o)
It's a stretch to say Fuller is a "DS9 guy" - according to Memory Alpha, he contributed the story of TWO episodes. Bryan Fuller is a Voyager guy, through and through...
Anyone know know where I can get the DS9 region 1 DVDs for under $100 total? Wishful thinking, I know, but it's worth a shot. I was planning to get the DS9 1-7 R2 set on Amazon UK, but I've heard there's quite a large difference between the two regions' transfers.
I think a few episodes on the R2 discs have hada few seconds cut, we could of course have the PAL vs NTSC debate all over again. Suffice to say PAL had some advantages over NTSC and vice versa.
Mojo on Facebook posted rerendered 1080 animations from Sacrifice of Angels. I honestly believe the artists do have the lionshare of CG work on hand, and it can be rerendered with minimal effort. Certainly less effort than what went into the model shots on TNG. https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10207822190009288
Hadn't seen that render! Thanks for posting! Not bad for a TV show in the 90s. Looks like the Cardassian ships were made out of tin foil, but otherwise cool stuff. LOL! I hadn't noticed that before, and it gave me a chuckle. This article seems to confirm your theory about much of the original assets being available and (comparatively speaking) easily converted and rendered in HD: http://trekcore.com/blog/2013/05/deep-space-nine-in-high-definition-one-step-closer/
It's not just the space battles though. From what I gathered, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it's the CGI mixed in with the live action, like Odo morphing and stuff like that. I believe those renders were also in SD, and making THOSE look good is appereantly quite tricky. But please, like I said, I might be wrong here.
Yeah all the morphs would need to be redone, along with the wormhole. It's the same with the Crystaline Entity and Junior from TNG, among others. They shouldn't be too tricky though.
I don't think it's the fact that it's tricky, but that DS9 has a lot more shots like that than TNG did. And VOY even more. So it would costs quite a lot. And so we get back to the costs involved not being worth it for CBS, considering they're not gonna get that money back.
That looks legit! Seems actually rendered from the original data. Regarding an upscale of the SD material: User attempts of course only can use the DVD sources. I bet the master tapes provide a much better quality (uncompressed). But are they interlaced or are the master tapes full frame?
