Honestly I don't know how in depth it is, but it does look as if the themes in the movie have been modernized. It has the potential to be much better than the original.

If nothing else it looks like they found a way to believably update OCP. The previous sequels, TV series and TV movies kept trotting out the same exact OCP which was feeling tired and dated as hell by that point.

Yeah, the only thing that really interests me about this film is how Keaton seems to be playing an evil Steve Jobs.

So he's playing Steve Jobs then?

Hmm, even the positive reviews seem to mostly say it's just "okay".

I'm not expecting much, but that's the best way to be pleasantly surprised.

I said 'sounds' and that they could be wrong and I'd go make my own mind up. So don't have a go.

Hah, and I wouldn't trust SFX's reviews for one second though. I used to read that magazine for years, till it became incredibly obsolete due to the internet (I sometime flick through in the supermarket just for a laugh at how out of date their "news" is)

But anyway, their reviews, especially lately, have always been highly suspect.

I see it's not out in the US till 12th Feb too, so I'll let you know ;)

    EDIT:

"I don't think I've ever seen a reboot or a remake that has so signally failed to GET the point of the original film."
They basically call it nothing but a Call of Duty style crummy video game shoot em up.
Once again, I'll see for myself, but it does indeed sound everything I thought it would be when I saw that first trailer.

Anyone here buy the original Robocop movie 4K remastered Bluray that was just released?

I want to make sure the upgraded video quality is worth the extra money to get. Most of these "remasters" end up being something you can barely notice.

^ I bought it about a week ago actually, although I don't have the previous Blu-ray release so I can't really say. I do have it on DVD though and its better than that if that helps :)

But I did see this guy reviewing it on Youtube, and he seems to think it's worth it

Especially since there is no such thing as a 4K Blu-Ray, so putting the 4K label on it is sketchy at best, and false advertising at worst.

Based on what I've seen it's a better quality video than the old release. I'm probably getting it, I believe it has a documentary as an extra.

They didn't. The cover simply says, "Newly Remastered."

This is seriously the laziest kind of criticism. I refuse to put any stake in a reviewer who can't complete a review of the film without mentioning "the original." Comparing one film to another has no substance in terms of how the film being reviewed looks, sounds, plays on screen, is acted, or anything at all, really.

How the two are similar or different has no bearing on this one. A good review won't even mention the 1987 film other than as namesake.

I'll likely go see this I'm just not hopeful. I really do think it's going to be a lot like the Total Recall remake from last year where it's going to "miss the point" and the fun of the original and change to much for the sake of changing it. Total Recall went from going to Mars to going to.... Europe? This movie is going from the brutal Murder of Murphy to his resurrection via cold, disturbing technology where he's essentially a controlled zombie to him being basically a guy in a suit? I dunno. Wait and see, I'll judge the movie on its own merits I'm just not hopeful.

Also on the front of videos about the original movie:

I found the 2012 Total Recall remake to be absolutely joyless. Fingers crossed that this one won't be the same level of empty visual hysteria and phoned in performances.
But the Robocop trailers have my attention... they're good at generating my enthusiasm.

It's currently at 53% on RT, with the general consensus seeming to be that it's watchable with a decent story and performances, but lacking in any of the edge and power of the original. Which is probably what must of us expected.

Still though, I have to say the more positive reviews kind of have me curious to see it. As long as it's not a complete dud, it might be worth seeing just for the different interpretation (and it certainly can't be any worse than Robocop 3 or Prime Directives).

Robocop 3 is a festering dung hill, that's for certain.
