    Hi,

I was curious about a line from 'Nemesis' where Picard states that he has made first contact with 27 civilisations.

Has anyone ever put together a list of these 27 civlisations known from the TV series and movies?

A few obvious ones to start with:
    • Borg
    • Ferengi
    • Q
    • Cytherians
    • Travellers
I would be interested to hear people's thoughts.

Do the Ba'ku count? Technically, he was the first official representative to deal with them.

Nope, I don't think they count.

"First contact" had previously taken place; Enterprise's mission was to attempt to establish communications.

"Several" previous attempts had failed, so first contact had already occurred.

The Memory Alpha article only notes three examples, Q, Ferengi and Borg, fyi.

Some could have been while he was Captain of the Stargazer.

Yes, I imagine that number would include his 20+ years commanding the Stargazer. At least I hope it does. Twenty-seven first contacts in less than a decade seems rather improbable to me.

Unless you happen to be Jonathan Archer, James Kirk, or Kathryn Janeway.

^ I guess it depends whether you define "first contact" as the first time you encounter a new alien race, or when you make *official* first contact and say "hi, we're the Federation", like Picard did with the Malcorians. The latter would tend to be much more rare.

Did that many new species really make their first appearances on ENT? Good grief.

Janeway gets a pass because she was doing a tour of a whole quadrant. And Kirk gets a pass because his show came on first. :p

I don't think there's too much of a difference, except the latter usually involves more documentation for the record books.

Nah, Janeway and Kirk both still count as racking up more than twenty first contacts within a decade (most of the ones Kirk encountered were brand-new to the Federation too, not just because TOS came first).

It doesnt matter if they were new to the show or not, to Earth they were the first to meet the Andorians, first to visit the Klingon Homeworld etc etc...

It would be interesting to work out how many of those happened during TNG's run on screen, others happening off screen during TNG, the movies or before hand.

Would be terrible if there were easily more than that number during the episodes of the show alone.

But does it count as first contact if no meaningful communication takes place? If all that's required is for both species to be aware of each other's existence, doesn't that set the bar really low?

As I recall, the Federation and the Ferengi were very aware of each other, but it took Picard to officially make first contact.

I wouldn't count Travellers, since he came aboard with a fellow starfleet officer.

Kozinski wasn't with Starfleet. Though I'd imagine that the Traveler likely did interact with Starfleet officers prior to coming aboard the Enterprise due to being Kozinski's assistant. :techman:

There were actually more species encountered by Kirk, but technically someone else had already been there first.
