Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

9/11 and Pearl Harbor combjned times 1,000, 000. And it happened inside a year ago. So it makes sense it'd constantly be mentioned.

 

I think that might be stretching it a bit. We saw hardly any onscreen deaths in Avengers, and even the level of destruction seemed pretty minimal compared to most alien invasion movies we've seen.

Obviously an alien army descending from the sky is a major event, but even in that world I can't see it packing nearly as big an emotional punch as something like 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.

 

Another fine episode. I loved Coulson's confidence in his former protege. That sort of thing, and lines like, "That shouldn't have happened either," are what makes this show a breath of fresh air. The story itself was another high-octane spy thriller, reminiscent of Alias or Man From UNCLE. Before the show premiered, I was hoping we'd see some superheroes pop up, but I'll be happy for them to continue like this.

I do wonder, though, if there will be any consequences to May's unilateral efforts.

And I got a kick out of Sky ogling Ward with the X-ray specs. I can imagine what the reaction would be if the roles were reversed, given the current political climate.

 

Compare 911 to Hiroshima.

I don't care, but I'm not letting it get under my skin that they keep hinting about it anyway. I'm just glad Coulson is there, whatever he is, i like the show, I don't find Agent Boy and Hacker Girl morally offensive, and i can easily get through an episode without my brain exploding.

 

Wait, what?!

 

Exactly what I thought when I heard it mentioned yet again. Considering what happened in that "battle", they are making as big a deal out of it as should be made.

Liked the last two episodes. This Coulson thing looks like it may be headed for something big. Perhaps his former agent knows something about Coulson's personality that Melinda and the doctor and (Cobie Smulders), don't.

The last scene with Fitz/Simmons (whichever) made me laugh out loud. Considering how anxious he was to kick Agent Squarejaw's ass, he lit out so fast it wasn't funny when he thought Skye might see him naked. Funny.

Liking the Skye/Coulson dynamic too. Jury's still out though.

 

Buildings were destroyed , it's entirely conceivable many died in the destruction and many people's sense of reality were likely destroyed with dimensional portals, aliens descending to take over Earth, Norse gods being real and ScarJo's amazing ass in her suit.

 

Well yeah, that last thing was pretty life-changing.

 

S.H.I.E.L.D. tried to nuke New York.

America should have seceded from S.H.I.E.L.D. out right and immediately after that gem came to light.

 

Being a Swede, it was so weird seeing so much of Sweden, swedish writing, swedish voices. I did not expect that.

And even the outdoors in Belarus was most definitely filmed in Sweden...

Although I am somewhat disappointed none of my friends in Stockholm told me about men in red masks walking around Sergel's Square while cameras where filming.

The show itself keeps getting better and better, the actors are getting into their roles and the mystery is growing, both about the Big Bad and what's up with Coulson.

And about the seeing naked men part, I thought she actually checked out Fitz since she warned him about it.

 

The public is always lied to.

But that hardly means that the Starchamber is of one mind.

 

Which is just what they want you to think!

Seriously though, I'd love it if they snuck in a few oblique references to X-Men or even Spider-man. I know they're not allowed to name names, but it shouldn't be too difficult to work around.

I thought it was the good kind of dull. Like the characters are starting to find their footing and develop some real chemistry.

As for the impact the Battle of New York would have....yeah it'd be pretty major and very much a world-wide thing. Imagine 9/11, Pearl Harbour, Hiroshima, the Battle of Britain and the moon landing all rolled into one. I mean it wasn't just aliens, gods and wholesale destruction, there were bloody great kaiju sized flying snake cyborg things!

Mind you, they did have a pair of green monsters tear up Harlem about a year previous and a swarm of robotic drones blew the crap out of the Stark Expo around the same time so maybe the blow was softened a *teeny* bit?

 

Physical evidence of extra-terrestrials has got to count for something in favor of it being a BIG event, no matter what the damage or body count was.

 

Well that was actually my thinking about it. If word travels as fast in that world as it does in ours, most people would have already been aware of Thor and Hulk, and seen footage of them fighting some pretty crazy things like the Abomination and the Destroyer (since I really doubt SHIELD would be able to keep those events completely contained).

So by the time aliens arrived, people probably would have been much more prepared for the idea than we would be, who've never seen giant monsters and robots and all-powerful gods battling each other in the streets.

 

And, yet, my non-scifi minded wife is still interested in watching the show.

General audience means the largest common denominator. To have a successful show you want to appeal to as many people as possible. If that means little to no aliens or super heroes/villains, then that's what it means.

Odds are more people will be interested in watching a spy/secret agent/CSI/police procedural than won't be. Yes, us hard core nuts what more, more, MORE but this is about attracting eyeballs and competing with everything else on the market.

And, as mentioned, this is Agent's of SHIELD, not the Avengers or X-Men. That's another movie entirely.

 

Oh come on! Chinese take out?! They'd obviously opt for Shwarma.

And, I actually think the events in "Thor" would be the ones most easily contained. The destroyer, the portal to Asgard, all of it. We're talking about a small, desert, town in New Mexico. Sure it'd probably generate conspiracy theories and such but it'd hardly be big news that reach most people. The stuff in "Thor" could have easily been contained by SHIELD.
