Let's say you were in charge of casting TOS of Star Trek. Using actors that would have been working when the actual castin occured, how would you cast it with different actors for the main cast?

I wouldn't. The casting was perfect.

Zero points for the boring answer!

^ And Tony Randall as Mr. Spock. Walter Matthau as Dr. McCoy. ;)

Actually, Klugman is a pretty good choice. He had plenty of gravitas for a role like Captain Kirk (or Winter or Pike or whatever).

As to my additions, well, Matthau could certainly do gruff at McCoy-plus-ten levels. But I have a hard time imagining Tony Randall as an emotionless alien. :D

I could see Klugman as McCoy.

    More suggestions:

Anne Francis as Janice Rand (Going along with the early idea that she was supposed to be the regular female lead.)

Bruce Lee as Sulu (He'd need more fight scenes.)

Eartha Kitt as Uhura (Not sure if she ever did regular weekly TV gigs, but she would have been purrrrrfect.)

And, if they'd conceived the character for Season 1 and gotten the actor before that other show did...

    Davy Jones as Chekov

Since someone else beat me to Robert Conrad, I'd have to go John Saxon for James T. Kirk (especially if we have Bruce Lee as Sulu and Eartha Kitt as Uhura, which I think are pretty inspired, as is Anne Francis - wow).

    And Charles Lane as Spock.

^Hey, we'll take another vote for Robert Conrad! :techman:

And if they'd also done a first pilot with its own cast...Jack Lord as Christopher Pike.

I'd go with Martin Landau as Spock, BTW. Having trouble thinking of a good Scotty offhand, but there must be tons of character actors from the period who would have done him justice. For some reason Dan Blocker keeps popping in my head, but he already had a regular gig on a much bigger TV show at the time....

Warren Stevens would be another possibility for McCoy...maybe even Spock.

And if they needed a character to take over on helm or navigation when Sulu or Chekov weren't on the bridge, it would be pretty cool to see Martin Millner flying the ship. Perhaps a regular security chief by day...?

Oh! Oh! Chuck Connors as the Captain. (A remore possibility to be sure, but if anything could've pried him away from the Rfileman, I like to think it would have been "Wagon Train to the Stars.")

I was thinking of bringing up Connors, but I couldn't see him doing anything less than the captain, and was too attached to Conrad in that role. (The Rifleman was over by the time Trek started going into production.)

I just remembered this. So it works after all! Perhaps we could have aliens kidnap Conrad and Connors and have them battle gladiator-style for the Captaincy.

In another universe, on another world, the pilot of "STAR TREK" would've been cast like, so as to meet NBC's mandate of a more ethnically diverse cast:

    Robert T. April: Robert Culp
    Number One: Eartha Kitt
    Spock: Martin Landau
Dr. Philip "Bones" Boyce: Warren Stevens
    Lt. José Ortegas: Michael Ansara
    Yeoman Colt: Pilar Seurat

Especially with Connors being 6' 6" and Conrad being 5' 8".

Bring a different dynamic to the role, all the scripts would be written the same. Amok Time would guest star Leonard Nimoy.

    :)
