Just like some folks are overthinking a couple of movies in a futile attempt to tear them down.

You're the one talking about "life lessons" from TOS

Kirk's only mission was to get the zienite, it wasn't his job to make Plasus listen.

    Bingo.

They were temporarily left alone in their quarters, try again. Anyway I'm going to let you guys shovel it, I have yet to find a legitimate intellectual response to anything I have said thus far. You guys really should knock off the baity flaming responses to everything. Yet more proof that JJtrek fans are super hostile to anyone with a differing opinion. I guess that makes up for the fact that no one likes the Trek reboot and you know it and it pisses you people off. Have fun.

No one around here hates TOS. Most of us just don't hold it up as some infallible holy grail of science-fiction.

    * Yeah, cause's that safe. Take emotionally traumatized children, beam them up to a ship, leave them alone in strange quarters for any length of time.

    * #6 film of the summer on Rotten Tomatoes, only beat out by indie films. Yeah, no one likes it

Starships coasting to a stop in space, space amoebas, super size bugle snacks of doom, and threatening to nuke a planet after you violate their airspace.

Star Trek Into Darkness - Worldwide the highest grossing Star Trek film of all time.

Yep, ya' got me. I'm soooooo hostile, and it's because no one likes STiD.

    Oooooooo...

    :D

BTW, I love TOS. I grew up on it, and I think the last 2 movies have done a wonderful job honoring it's legacy.

It's just that I don't see TOS as this highly sophisticated, deeply intellectual piece of science fiction art. It's got some good stories, some good commentary about society of the day, some great character relationships, some funny moments, some cheesy moments, some sexy moments, some great action, some crazy aliens.

Yep, STiD is just like TOS.

I know man, complete box office bomb. Everyone fucking hated it. Why couldn't it have been a hit like Star Trek V or Nemesis.

I'm angry because they won't make anymore Star Trek ever again obviously, since STiD did so poorly because everybody hated it so much.

    Oh, well...

I know man. And they didn't bring back D. Kelly or Jame Doohan either; sure their dead, but they could have CGIed into the movie*.

Differing points of view are fine, but "Comments to PM" does mean that discussion of a warning or other moderator action is to be taken to PM, not carried on in the thread.

These'll get you another trolling warning, though. As before, comments to PM.

To be fair, if the movies are to be judged by their content (or as you contend, lack of content) then it's only fair to judge Star Trek: The Original Series by that same standard.

Star Trek, as it existed from 1966-69, was very much about Kirk going out and enforcing "truth, justice and the American way" and there's nothing wrong with that because it's fun to watch. But if you tried to mold your foreign policy on the actions of Jim Kirk and that Starfleet, you'd have a clusterfuck of epic proportions. Going around and enforcing your values on others doesn't garner you respect it garners you venom and distrust. I pointed to the episode "A Taste of Armageddon" earlier in this thread and I think its one you should take time to re-watch to understand what I'm talking about. It shows a Federation that is heavy-handed in dealing with technologically less advanced cultures and a Federation that will attempt to enforce its will on said cultures.

The reason I like the Abrams films is the same thing that drew me to TOS to begin with: they're incredibly fun to watch. Are the Abrams films as "deep" as TOS attempted to be? No. But I think that's more a by-product of two things: having two hours to tell a complete story and trying to expand the base of people who are willing to buy tickets to a Star Trek movie. Because, face it, without ticket buyers or people who are willing to watch Star Trek on TV the franchise is dead and buried. I was amazed Abrams was able to resuscitate the franchise after all the ill-will that had accumulated towards the end of the Berman run.

    YMMV.

Perhaps this one new poster is overthinking his own importance.

On an entertainment level, STID was definitely better than ST 2009. That being said, the franchise is a lot worse off than it was after Nemesis. They've totally ruined Trek, they intent was to replace the original despite their bullshit claim that the prime universe continues. Now they are facing backlash from objective fans, some of the people here are going to kiss abrams ass and stick up for nutrek no matter what but the fact remains that there is a legitimate hatred for this new version of Trek and that feeling isn't going to go away. The best way to deal with paramount and abrams is to speak with your wallets.

People did. The last two movies have made bank. A minority of disgruntled fans among a dwindling fanbase of hardcore, inflexible fans, aren't going to affect shit.

    (emphasis mine)

Two warnings in this thread already, and you're still taking swipes at fans of Abrams' Trek?

Here's another one, to go with those; comments to PM.

The prime universe does continue, in the monthly novels from Pocket books. Speak with your wallet - buy them and read them.

More than TrekMovie. There's at least a bit of discussion and reflection here.

Transwarp beaming really is a pain in the a.. but at least Scotty's formula was confiscated by S31 and then hopefully lost with the Kelvin archive

What exactly is the problem with blue warp nacelles?

The blue nacelles are really a pain the ass, but at least you always rotate the hue.
