For some reason, I feel like bursting out into song.

A New Zealand women phone up her local council and told them that there was a 'baby moa' in her garden despite the fact that moas have been extinct for centuries. The dog control officers went out to investigate and discover the large bird was an emu. it seems that there had once been an emu farm nearby and some escapees from that farm had been living wild along the riverbank. The workers at a water treatment plant were quite aware that the birds were there and had recently notice that once was missing.

The emu was returned to the riverbed

I wonder if this was a case of the woman not knowing that moas were extinct, or a case of her not being able to identify an emu, or both. Is the emu a well-known bird out of Australia?

(an emu appeared on an episode of DS9, maybe someone can tell me what episode it was, and what Odo called the bird, as I have forgotten).

Extremely well known here in the USA. Until the emu market crashed, there were emu farms EVERYWHERE.

There are still emu farms. It's a niche market. You can buy bottles of emu oil (supposed to be good for skin conditions), and you can buy emu burgers and emu steaks at specialty restaurants.

A supermarket in my area sells emu meat alongside beef in the meat department.

There are emu farms down in southwestern Ontario, too - I played in a bridge tournament once in Leamington, which is near Windsor (across the river from Detroit). I remember having emu for dinner between sessions, and enjoying it. I haven't seen it anywhere since, though I can't say I've gone out of my way to look for it.

I thought it was a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics.

I thought it was an affected pose of being a sensitive, sullen, introverted, angsty teen. (Yeah, I know the music came first.)

    I like that emu.

We had an ostrich on TV in Australia for many a year.

I wonder why I didn't do that. I don't think I even attempted a search. I posted the question two hours before I went out so I had plenty of time.
