The concept of updating Franz Joseph's Starfleet Technical Manual and USS Enterprise deck plans is really intriguing, and gets the creative juices flowing.

I've decided to sit down and begin to make a master list of what should be on there.

To my mind, and the reason I started my own thread instead of posting in one of the existing ones, is that it's got to be respective first and foremost of what was on screen. Only when that can't be reasonable known on inferred will I reach out to other sources for data.

We've never seen a definitive and comprehensive TOS Tech Manual! After all these decades. It still does not exist.

That, above all else, just blows my mind. So, here is my first revision of that master list: (I know I'm missing something, so be gentle)

Change replicator to synthesizer. It didn't become the replicator until TNG.

Corrected. Also added the Pergium Mining Station, miner's uniforms and K-7 Space Station.

Also, I'm on the fence about how I should honor the work done by the Okudas in TOS-R. I don't agree with some of the creative choices they made with regard to elements we didn't see in the original episodes, but which they added (Gorn ship, space hippy ship). But some of them are inspired (an adaptation of the TAS cargo ship as the Antares in "Charlie X").

Also, this will be also a sort of visual mission log, that gives us an excuse to dig into the people, places, and adventures the Enterprise crew had during their 5 year mission.

:techman: And you already provided a list of candidates. I love it. :luvlove:

It would help to divide the list into sections: uniforms, field equipment etc.
Thus everyone who has something to contribute could easier see what's there and what could still be added.

The first item that comes to my mind is the leather Starfleet Tunic Wrap worn by Charlie Evans in "Charlie X".

With the new additions of TOS-R it might be a simple solution to add a TOS-R section. Thus people who can't find something in the TOS section would look up the TOS-R section (and understand it's a new addition and/or alteration of TOS).

I will come back soon, but currently devote my time to the saucer's deck plans as I've fallen behind schedule.

Thank you, Robert, for joining the discussion! I will organize the master list into an outline/Table of Contents once I'm sure the list is complete.

Which leads me to this question: How do we pay respect to Franz Joseph's Starfleet Headquarters? It seems too prominent to ignore.

A revised breakdown of the crew complement of the Constitution class starship should be included. I think the listing included in FJ's blueprints could use a bit of re-thinking.

What about the bridge stations, control panels and displays? I know only some were included in the original but we certainly have enough information now to complete it.

Agreed! And I think the resources on your forums are a great effort towards that end!

Also, Engineering, sickbay, everywhere that had control panel or display should be featured.

    Is there an official one?

Also, I think there should be somewhere in the text an in-universe acknowledgement of the "Hodgkin's Law of Parallel Planetary Development" (the one that explains why all those aliens and planets look so much like us and earth?

As well as the Richter's Scale of Culture.

Also, I'd make the Enterprise 1080' feet long.

Solves more problems than it creates.

Not that I am aware of, beyond the number of "430" given in various places as the total crew complement. There is the breakdown on FJ's Enterprise blueprint set, and I've seen some other fan-produced listings. But nothing more "official" than that that I've seen.

    Anyone else know of any?

Or too conjectural to be considered in the first place.

The magic words that attracted me to this thread. Given the dissent regarding various issues (e.g. Constitution vs. Enterprise Class) the obvious solution can only be to be screen-accurate, IMHO.
I want to see fans that find fault with such an approach.

Regarding devices we can definitely determine their functions from the actual TOS Information. E.g. ray "gun" is obviously some kind of engineering tool in "Charlie X" and/or some kind of morse code transmitter in "Squire of Gothos".
Unless someone seriously wants to claim that the two guys exiting the Jefferies Tube just returned from the shooting range and DeSalle was actually a Klingon agent who tried to shoot down the Enterprise with this device after he had landed on Gothos. ;)

Everything else is conjectural speculation and open to interpretation and should be listed as such, IMHO.

    Bob

P.S. Just because Gene Roddenberry liked the FJ blueprints of the Enterprise, which FJ apparently took as a justification to add "approved by Gene Roddenberry" (that would have been the task of Matt Jefferies...), doesn't make these "official".

The little anecdote told by FJ how Gene Roddenberry picked a room for himself on these blueprints but didn't really understand which room he had picked (...) is clear evidence that Gene Roddenberry didn't really understand what he was looking it (which would be a presupposition for a qualified approval, IMHO).

The FJ blueprints and TM are fully licensed tie-in products, and in that sense are official. Naturally, that is completely irrelevant to whether fans find them satisfactory.

There ARE a lot of fully licensed tie-in products out there. That status doesn't, however, validate them as being representative of what viewers of the show watched and fell in love with.

Official in the sense that royalties have been paid and no violence of copyrights has occurred. That tells us little or nothing regarding the value of content, which can simply be evaluated by what you actually see on your screen (and what not).

Yeah, I pretty much covered that in the part of my post that you left out. I've highlighted it for you, here, in case you missed it:

I would also edit the list to add:

    78. Klingon disruptor pistol
    79. Klingon communicator
    80. Lazarus' Timeship
    81. Energizer Room
    82. Dilithium Crystal
    83. Lazarus' clothes
    84. Spock's red toolbox and lucite grabbers
    85. Science lab's containment analyzer
    86. Medical biolab

Regarding the Pike era phaser rifle, it was apparently a prop that FJ strongly disliked aesthetically. He refused to include it in the TM for that reason.
