I was wondering whether Carol Marcus actually is a weapons expert in this timeline. Her résumé also includes 'science officer' and 'doctor in applied physics'.

I got the impression that her interest in weapons has something to do with her father—like a subsidiary curiosity. Otherwise, I think her main vocation is physics. This would certainly make sense for the (potential) third film.

Yeah, because science (especially applied physics) would be completely useless to a weapons expert.

Except Spock googled her and found out who she really was and I think if she had NOT been a weapons expert he would have blabbed that to everyone. Like he did her real name.

    She did falsify her orders. I don't think she's a super-weapon expert.

She has a PhD in science but earned extra money as a student as a pole dancer at London's Spearmint Rhino Club.

If Spock found out who she really was he also found out what her training and expertise was. I'm pretty sure he would have said something before they started getting her to do torpedo stuff if that was all bullshit.

Maybe her field is "subatomic rearrangement physics" ;)

Why can't she be a weapons expert? In the prime timeline she did develop the Genesis Torpedo afterall.

Of course, and in the Prime Timeline we see her a lot older and now diversified. She may well have started out as a weapons expert.

It's a new timeline. NuCarol went into applied physics and used her expertise in weapons for Starfleet. Carol Prime went into applied physics, and used her expertise to develop "weapons" of terraforming. I wonder if Carol Prime was ever in Starfleet.

Yeah but it wasn't a weapon. And I think only the Klingons call it that.

Carol Marcus has plenty of time to develop the Genesis Device if that's something she's going to do in this reality. There's still what, 20 years before she would have done that in the Prime Universe?

Well, the atomic bomb became atomic power. So she might understand the dynamics of photon torpedoes or something. To be honest, she seemed to understand the the circuitry of the torpedo itself, and not the warhead, so she might've (in the Prime Timeline) programmed the torpedo casing and primary circuitry and mechanisms for the Genesis device and NOT the actual terraform program. That was done by David.

You may be right. The Genesis Project had a whole staff of people working on it. Anybody could have been in charge of several different aspects. Perhap Carol's main job was the delivery system.

I mean hell, this thing must've been in development for years in many places all over the Federation with a staff of possibly thousands, I highly doubt it was only developed on Regula One, I think that was just a testing station.

No, not really. The two were developped in parallel. Other than the fact that it's fission, the two technologies have very little in common.

But maybe you're right. Maybe Marcus hit on something researching weapons and made Genesis based on that, although the Regula scientists' reaction to the "military" seem to indicate otherwise.
