Given my sentiments on the issue, he was probably correct in keeping it a secret. I am in no rush if ever to see it.

I am still not liking this wimpy new-spock either. Actually less since the first movie reboot.

I've never in my life seen so many people down on a science-fiction film that critics across the board are giving four stars out of five.

Have Trekkies become that out-of-touch with reality?

Something that was purely theirs is no longer theirs, now they have to share, and some can't stand that. Unfortunately it devolves into insulting the new initiates and the general masses.

    Here's how it pans out:

Paramount will make a metric shitload of money on this movie.

They will make more Star Trek like this.

    oldTrek will come back, never.

There is something to this. But I think it has to do with devolving Star Trek for mass consumption. Not that new people are joining the club.

I still haven't had anyone convince me Star Trek devolved with these films...

Nor have I. In fact, I have a few friends for whom ST09 proved the perfect gateway to Trek of old, becoming every bit a fan as myself of all eras of Star Trek when they previously wouldn't have given it the time of day.

I think the answer to this is: yes. I however will be there opening night! Maybe I'm not a "trekker" after all... :)

And this is what's wrong with the trutrekkie mentality: they think they're in a club.

A wise person once said that the easiest way to prove that you're in a club is to keep someone else out.

Every Star Trek production ever was intended for "mass consumption." When Star Trek failed commercially, it was still being supported by ninety percent of dedicated Star Trek fans - but the general audience deserted it.

There is no place now, commercially, for theatrical films that cost what Star Trek costs to produce unless they're going to be big, big hits. Therefore the size of the audience the studio needs to reach has grown. These people are not less smart, nor do they have less taste than trekkies.

I swear to gods I haven't seen so many people react with such an offended sense of entitlement since Obama was first elected President in 2008. "I want my Star Trek back!"

This is why I like Dennis. He's always ready to impart some folksy wisdom. He's like an even more ornery Yoda. ;)

    Bazinga!

I took my boys to see Trek '09 and they loved it. Now that they are a bit older (9 & 10) they started asking to watch the TOS. We've been working through all the old episodes (as a family, no less)... and they enjoy it as much as Trek '09.

We've made a few ventures into watching TNG, after which my 10 year old opined, "Kirk is soooo much better than Picard!"

I guess even the new fans of the franchise will find something to argue about!

Looking forward to watching ID with them in May!

Yes, this devolution was my greatest fear going in. The early trailers and PR releases didn't help, and STID looked like it was aiming for GI Joe with a side order of Transformers. But to my surprise it is overwhelmingly about the characters, and treats them in such a way that my wary acceptance of them in ST09 has seemed to have blossomed into genuine affection.

I don't think it is JJ who has "turned" Trek. I honestly think it's the other way around.

I am on Tumblr where every day, I see the excited ramblings of 16-18 year old newly minted Trekkers who saw the '09 film, and now are watching up all of the original series on Netflix.

It's pretty cool. Can't argue with that.

So, are we saying that Nemesis and Insurrection were more evolved Trek? Or Enterprise? Really? Was First Contact the cutoff or did the devolution begin earlier?

"They reboot the franchise, and we fall back. They destroy Vulcan, and we fall back. They change the trinity to Kirk, Spock, and Uhura, and we fall back. Not again. Not this time. The line must be drawn HERE, this far and no further!"
