Well, they were nasty first, perfectly fine with possibly killing whoever was onboard the TARDIS with their beam. This Doctor is more of an asshole than his predecessors although Ten also had a dark, vengeful streak at times (e.g. how he punished the family in "Human Nature/Family of Blood")

I'm more fed up with how Clara spelled out what she was thinking instead of showing it.

However, I voted "good". It was an exciting episode with some cleverness thrown in. The visuals were amazing. There were some odd cuts in the episode but I have a feeling they will have some meaning in hindsight.

Also, in the beginning of the episode, during the scene where the brothers look at the salvaged TARDIS we see a pair of boots sticking out from under the trash. But those weren't the Doctor's. So, did I miss something or did I imagine something?

I thought it'd be funny if the machine-that-could-make-other-machines in the TARDIS had decided to one-up him and make a real self-destruct...

Nope, to be a true chav is a lifestyle choice, not a background upbringing as the tabloids would have us believe - and the main aspect of choosing chavness is choosing *not* to develop, *not* to improve onesself.

Since both Rose and Donna are very to go places, learn new stuff and generally improve themselves and their lot in life, that'd be the exact opposite of being a chav.

Their mothers, OTOH, are a different matter. (And, yes, Sylvia Noble in particular is meant to be middle-class, but she wants to stagnate, and Donna to stagnate, and that makes her a chav, IMO...)

I thought it was okay. Really thought we'd see a few more homages to previous console rooms but whatever. Didn't really mind the reset button.

LOL@the salvage team. The casting director seriously had an off day.

Nah, this reset wasn't nearly as "utterly essential to the property's continued survival" like that 2009 example you gave.

I didn't think that was the pile of salvage - I thought he was seeing into the TARDIS and seeing Clara...

I thought I could hear the voices of the third and fifth Doctor during the scene where the salvage crew member was opening up the console. Did anyone else notice this?

I was thinking the same thing. Normally I tend to be pretty forgiving about acting quality (I am more interested in plot details) but in this case, ouch. The little girl from The Rings of Akhaten has more acting ability than all three of this week's guest stars put together.

More generally about the episode, I liked the music, and the few shots of the TARDIS that weren't corridors were cool. The idea that a relatively primitive technological device (the object that Clara picks up) could catastrophically damage a TARDIS that badly strains credulity.

I couldn't help but laugh when the Doctor called Clara "the salvage of a lifetime". I'm sure Clara would love to have heard that. :p Even worse, if you put together the Doctor's statements to the salvage crew, "I'm offering you the salvage of a lifetime" and the later clarification that by "the salvage" he didn't mean the ship, but rather Clara . . . let's just say some rather off-colour conclusions could be drawn. :borg:

I heard several Doctor's including the Fourth saying "not even the hordes of Genghis Kahn could get thru those doors".

I rated it Good, mainly for it being a reset episode. I thought it would have been cool for Clara to know the Doctor's secrets. By the way, who wrote the Great Time War book, and is it referring to the Time War that caused the Time Lords to go away or another Time War? I'm figuring it wasn't the Doctor who wrote it since he wouldn't mention his own name.

^ Maybe the TARDIS wrote the book. She exists across all time & space after all.

It was good seeing the swimming pool again, the Doctor said it would turn up.

The library was mind boggling, as was the observatory, etc.

I think it would've been a cool route to go down to have Clara know a few things about the Doctor. Because for the first time in ages here's a companion that doesn't really trust him or know what to make of him and she's very guarded (and can we blame her?). Knowing a few of his secrets could've helped establish that trust and made for a nice interplay between them as time goes on. But I guess the writers have reserved that for an annoying character I wish would just go away instead.

Who knows...maybe when Moffat finally shows his hand with where the whole Clara thing is going it'll be something better but for me it's a missed opportunity with the reset button.

    The Ninth Doctor said that.

As for the episode... decidedly average filler.

So apparently when your body is covered in third degree burns, you turn into a raging monster instead of writhing on the ground in pain.

They say hospital burn wards are awful places to work. I didn't realize why until now.

Visually good, nice to see the pool and the library was cool, but it was a complete waste with that reset, it's like they're playing it safe here, and the salvage team annoyed me to no end.

The very first of those voices was Susan, giving her explanation for TARDIS. I heard Romana II as well.

I didn't notice anyone else post about it in the thread ... Did everyone see the close-up of the key? In the early part of the episode, right before the shields come down, the Doctor turns the key. There is a close-up, and it is clearly labeled "smiths" ... I thought that was adorable.

Average. I was a bit underwhelmed, actually. The story wasn't the great. Really, the grabbed the TARDIS at the exact moment he lowered the shields? Convenient. Really, he needs the help of salvagers to find Clara in his own ship? Weird. The solution was a bit out there, and literally used a reset button!

I also was not impressed with the interior of the TARDIS. In some ways, I actually preferred Tom Baker's romp through the TARDIS in The Invasion of Time. We mostly got corridors and echoes of the control room. We got extremely brief glimpses of the library and pool and a couple of minor rooms. I actually prefer the cozier feel of the TARDIS in the classic series. The new hallways are just kind of bleh. Just sort of there.

That was a token memory just so it didn't feel like a complete waste of time!
