Or that he even could? The only way Bond could have saved that victim is if he'd shot Patrice first, and obviously he couldn't do that.

The trouble with Casino Royale is that it portrays Bond by turns as an idiot and a genius (just check out his surveillance techniques in Miami airport.)

Knowing how fast modern computing is is somewhat removed from being anywhere near the level of technical expertise that Silva and Q are meant to have. The trouble is you want to argue both ways, you berate Bond for questioning M's competence whilst also berating him for not questioning Q's!

And let's face it, Mallory and co were quite right...

But, you know, you hate Skyfall so keep picking. Does it have flaws, yup, do I still love it, yup.

On the tech front, having some knowledge of technology doesn't make Bond a tech specialist, which is what Q is. Bond would defer to him on stuff like that, that's Q's job. It'd be like questioning the procedures of Microsoft designers because you know how to set up a desktop PC.

Ye all knew this day would come. And it hits all the right beats, along with the usual few stupid/joke ones. (Except Moneypenny's huge frizzy 'fro. Totally not suited for field work. At least Jinx got the hair part right!)

I find Craig perfect for Bond in any objective way to measure it, but is also beyond dull. I can't get engaged in his character at all.

Bond has been shown to have a vast knowledge about anything he's asked about throughout the entire film series.

Well, despite helming the most successful Bond movie ever, Sam Mendes is bailing on the franchise so he can focus on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and King Lear...

    Shudder...

I'm not surprised Mendes has made that decision, he has other projects he wants to work on and he clearly almost did take it on. No point working yourself into an early grave!

He isn't ruling out doing another one at some point in the future. If DC does end up doing two more it might be that Mendes' hiatus is only one film and he returns for Craig's send off.

You do kinda have to feel sorry for the next guy...

I hope the next director doesn't make a film as dull, plodding, and ultimately pointless as Skyfall, which had a hero that didn't emote at all. It had more plot holes than most time travel films.

Whereas I imagine the studio are hoping whoever makes the next film makes one as unbelievably financially succesful and critically acclaimed as SkyFall :p

I reckon they'll go after Danny Boyle next time. Possibly Chris Nolan, if these rumours about him taking over the JL franchise for WB aren't true.

I'm not sure I want either of them (sacrilege I know) although of the two I'd take Boyle.

Boyle is visually a good director, I just find him a bit of a magpie, always lifting stuff from other people/other films, so his stuff always feels a little derivative (Sunshine, starts off as 2010, turns into Event Horizon for no readily apparent reason) and I still fail to believe that no one working on 28 Days Later had read/seen/heard of Day of the Triffids.

Nolan I like a lot, although I find I’m liking him less and less now he has more and more creative control and makes increasingly bloated films. If he could reign himself in then he’d make a great Bond film, I’m just not sure he can. I love the first half of Inception, he just goes too far with it (to quote the language of the film it has one level too many) and whilst Rises was fantastic in places, it was terrible in others with too much story jammed into its long run time. It’s a shame because for a long time Nolan was the one director who never disappointed me.

If it were me I’d get Kenneth Brannagh to do it…

As an interesting Skyfall related side note, I believe Deakins is moving into directing (which could be a fantastic, or might work out like Baird’s stab at direction…)

    Branagh would work too.

I must admit, I like Boyle's style for the same reasons you've listed! I think it makes him very diverse and unpredictable. And I think if he were to make a Bond movie, he'd probably make it very stylish, maybe Hitchcockian (sort of North by Northwest meets 1960s 007).

I think after Skyfall's success, they will probably look for another British director of comparable clout to Mendes, so after the three just mentioned, the list is probably quite short. Roger Mitchell (who has already worked with Craig IIRC)? David Yates? Matthew Vaughn?

Yeah Boyle is definitely hard to pigeonhole. It will be interesting to see who they get next, given past choices it may be that they go a bit left field next time for someone completely unexpected.

Well Jones is going to be tied up with Warcraft isn't he? And neither Johnson or Edwards would have done anything on the scale of a Bond film. Looper was fantastic and Monsters dull though, so given the choice I'd go with Johnson!
