People are seriously concerned that Alba didn't look like Chris Evans's sister? :guffaw:

I'd say the Hulk in Avengers demonstrated that a mocap CGI version would/could be for the best.

Especially if you get James Gandolfini to do the voice.....

The visual realization of the 4 wasn't a problem with the two films. I thought all four of them looked fine, both in terms of FX and casting. There were other issues that mattered far more, starting with the scripts.

And then wouldn't people complain that there is an Italian American accent?

I always heard it more as a New York/New Jersey accent. it's basically the voice I always 'heard' in my head when I read the Thing's dialogue.

Putting aside the horrible makeup job they gave Alba to try and make her look blonde and Waspy (they would've been better off just letting her be a brunette) there's the fact that the girl can't act to save her life. The guy playing Reed wasn't much of an actor either.

^ Reed was my least favorite of the 4 in the films, but Alba was fine.

I should have a blue collar jewish New York accent. His background is quite specific, I think, even down to Kirby and Lee fictionalizing a real world neighborhood that they were familiar with IIRC.

It's called "acting." We're really getting to the point where the Thing has to be played by an actual blue collar Jew from a particular neighborhood in New York City?

No, but I don't think I have ever heard Gandolfini change his Jersey accent. And I was also trying to sarcastically comment on all these people who say Alba didn't "look" the part.

Well frankly the idea that the FF were the "only" super heroes around or the X-Men as the only super powered beings around always struck me as somewhat odd in that they all came from the same "universe". I can understand the whole "well you can't mention Iron Man in a Fox movie" and I can take it to a point. Sure, they don't have the rights to the character, BUT that doesn't mean you can't name drop or casually mention that "Oh and Stark's been working on some exo-armor concepts and needs my input I'll be home before dinner Sue darling"

    It's a name - big deal.

My dream FF movie would have it actually pick up with them an already established Super Hero team. Sort of like how Rise of the Silver Surfer started out - people knew them, they have their tower and basically we don't need to rehash the origin. Maybe tell it in cartoon/comic style in the beginning during the credits and leave it at that.

And I would actually not entirely dismiss the original two movies - hell what I'd find funny as anything would be Johnny and Ben watching Silver Surfer and going "Oh geez Ben could they make you look any stupider and c'mon that's NOT what Galactus looks like? What? You think people couldn't take a guy taller than Four Freedoms tower in purple and pink body armor?"

"Well at least they picked that hottie to play our Suzie Q."

"Dude, not cool. I can't even watch her anymore without seeing... shudder... my sister."

So that way you don't entirely have to find a new way to 'reboot' the story, just say that the original two were movies loosely based on the real thing. Which would totally be a very Fantastic Four thing to see.

Now as for casting, that's the tricky part - honestly I really did like Chicklis as The Thing and Chris Evans did a pretty decent Torch - buuut they need someone a bit more in the vain, funny and teen demo look for the nuTorch. Although I'd like to see someone who's maybe not well known but still not a total newcomer. So my pick for a new Johnny Storm would be Hunter Parrish from Weeds - he's blonde, can be serious but I think if he was given the direction to be more 'Johnny Storm' I think he could pull it off. He's worked around enough comedians and while he's never really done any stunt work - that's not the worst thing really.

Invisible Woman would be a bit tricky - a natural blonde would be preferable. Someone who's got a bit of an athletic build - which is probably why Alba was picked, she's got a decent body, and when she was on Dark Angel, she was used to stunt work and hey she's gotta look decent in a skin hugging bodysuit. But I think they need to be more selective in picking actors and actresses that actually LOOK like siblings. My dream Sue Storm would have been - if it was a few years back - Jeri Ryan. (Although I still think she'd make an awesome Ms. Marvel) but I think of the actresses out there today - Laura Vandervoot - could make an interesting late 20s Sue - she's like 28 so by the time filming wraps up she'd be close to 30 - which'd be decent enough. But at least she's got experience with super hero shows (Being Supergirl in Smallville) and she's got a decent enough build to wear an FF uniform

Now Reed would be a bit tough since you need someone who's older than Sue and Johnny, similar age to Ben - but also can pull off the genius role without looking like a total nerd. Honestly I'd love to see someone take what we had in the "old" Reed from the previous Fox movies - but with a stronger actor.

Well, to Marvel it is. I'm pretty sure in situations like this you can't even mention a character without having some kind of a license to use them.

I would think that something as simple as a name drop would be a pretty easy thing for the studio's legal departments to figure out. Remember that we almost got the Stark Tower/Oscorp Tower crossover in The Avengers and Amazing Spider-Man. In fact, I would love to see Joss Whedon and Mark Millar sit down for lunch and toss potential cross studio Marvel easter eggs at each other.

To us, it's a name. To the corporations and their lawyers, it's intellectual property, and it can't be used without a license. Maybe they could tiptoe around it with oblique references, but once they throw in the actual name "Stark" or "Tony" in a context that's clearly about a businessman/inventor who works with high-tech armor, then it's infringement. There are very specific rules about using actual character names.

Still, it would be possible for the studios to work together and arrange for such cross-references. As I've mentioned before, there was an agreement reached to include The Amazing Spider-Man's OsCorp Tower into the digital Manhattan of The Avengers, but it fell through for scheduling reasons. So yeah, it could be done, but it would have to be coordinated between the respective licensees. You couldn't just sneak it under the radar.

The origin-montage opening worked very well in The Incredible Hulk. That could work. Except, of course, the FF aren't just superheroes; they're primarily explorers and adventurers, and Reed is constantly producing new inventions and discoveries with world-changing potential. That's something I'd like to see a movie get right -- a portrayal of the FF as a scientist/adventurer family that includes superheroics and world-saving as part of its routine, rather than just as superheroes. That's what makes them distinctive, and it would be worth seeing onscreen.

My dream FF movie would have the Inhumans and The Watcher.

^ Yes! I'm thrilled that Vaughn will be producing this. I'm still very optimistic for the reboot, and have high hopes with Josh Trank. CorporalCaptain hit it on the nail with what was wrong with the original Fox FF films...it really does start with the scripts. I also still don't think that Tim Story was the right type of director for the films. I've been curious about what Sean Astin's pitch was (he and Story brought two separate pitches to Fox at the time, Story's won out). There was also way too much Ultimate Fantastic Four influence in the films.

Good point. Originally, the concept was that they were not even going to have costumes. The costumes were only added after the poor sales of the first couple of issues.

The origin can easily be told in a short flashback in a briefing room scenario or something.

Well, at the time FF came along, Marvel didn't really do superhero comics, but focused more on horror/SF, romance, Westerns, and the like. So the first couple of issues of FF were written in more of a monster-story vein. The male characters' powers are all a little freakish, Ben is explicitly turned into a monster, and the first issue is largely about battling the Mole Man's monsters, with the second being a battle with the monstrous-looking "Skrulls from Outer Space!" So the original premise was very much in the vein of sci-fi B-movies of the '50s and '60s -- radiation transforming astronauts into bizarre entities, giant monsters coming from beneath the Earth or living on Monster Island, Red-Scare allegories of disguised alien invaders in our midst. So reorienting it toward costumed heroes battling supervillains was more than just a change of clothes, but a shift of genre as well.

I have to agree with the above posters - it'd be nice to see the FF return to their 'roots' as a more adventurer focused team - but then again I would also like to see them actually encounter some more of their rogues gallery. Be nice to see like the Wizard, Hydro Man, Mole Man, Kang, some villans OTHER than Dr. Doom.

I really like that idea. Sounds not unlike how the proposed Deadpool script was supposed to handle the character's depiction in Wolverine.
