I used to have the double-length feature on VHS back in the day, and I used to watch it quite often because they're brilliant episodes. I had this tape before I saw part one by itself, and remember being quite shocked at the amazing cliffhanger that i missed out on. I may be remembering wrong, but I think the musical cue at the end of part one is a bit truncated in the edited-together version. There was definitely no cut to black.

I do remember either Dr. Crusher's wig changed, or the lighting did, between dramatic moments. Must have been the shock. ;)

While I haven't seen this UK version with the build-up to the firing of the deflector weapon omitted (just read the description on Memory Alpha), I hope they don't use it as a guide for this standalone Blu-ray.

When I made my feature-length version from the DVDs about ten years ago, I preserved the cut to black and then fade up into Part II. All I had to do was make the cut in Part I just after Troi's close-up and before the final dolly move in on Riker. Then, I edited Part II in during the recap right at that same moment, at the start of Riker's shot. It was a seamless cut, both picture and audio. I just silenced the center track on the, "And now the conclusion..." So there's a brief, music-only cut to black and fade up into Part II (and, of course, I removed the main title sequence from Part II).

What I'm hoping for is something almost exactly like what I did -- with the added benefit of HD, 7.1 lossless audio and no credits over Act I of Part II. That would be just fantastic.

I've only skimmed the thread so maybe this question has been answered, but if they are making it a movie, how will they include the very end score of part 1. One of the reasons why that cliffhanger works so well is after you get "Mr. Worf, Fire", it cuts to To be Continued and you get that famous score. With the movie, it seemed like that would be lost.

The season 3 set will have the unedited episode for those that prefer that version!:techman:

I did. Seems seamless enough, and could be interesting to own as a movie. Still, when I get to BOBW on the Season 3 Blu-Ray set, I might just go get the standard DVDs and watch Part II and Family. I always try to watch those three episodes together as they make up TNG's best trifecta of episodes in terms of a mini-story arc.

Here's my version that I described above:

Link contained unknown malware and has been removed from all posts.

(NOTE: This is only a 3 minute clip and is for illustrative purposes only. It is my fair use comment on how the edit should be handled. © 2012 CBS Studios Inc. All Rights Reserved.) :)

That's pretty good, even though you cut off most of the score.

What you hear is the original musical score Jones wrote for the transition between the Part I recap and Part II, except without Majel Barett's voice over. That's really the only change I made.

It's true that it means abandoning Jones' Part I end music, but it's the cleanest, simplest way to join the two parts without losing any visual content.

True, but you are still losing the "Auditory" content. Maybe there isn't a way to keep it in tact but still transition from one episode to the next.

If this BOBW-SE release will be worldwide as stated before, i highly doubt they will cut it any other way than the existing movie cut, which has the deflector scene missing.
Otherwise they would have to alter every single dubbing track of the various languages to match, because they do either fit to the seperated episodes, or the movie with the missing sequence.

Nice edit btw you've made there, Maxwell. :bolian:

Given that they have access to all of the old footage, it's possible that they have found a slick way to edit it together.

That's pretty good! Much better than the nasty butchery work I was used to before.

The existing movie version, from what I can see on Memory Alpha, was only released in PAL regions (and with the other 2-part episodes, aside from Chains Of Command, only the ones originally aired as feature-length movies have been released to the rest of the world), and more exactly just the UK. But considering what CBS has done with The Measure of A Man, and even further back when Paramount released the season sets of Voyager and Enterprise and they used the UPN masters, which featured scenes not included in the international masters, I wouldn't be surprised if the feature version did include extra scene's---plus considering that Best Of Both Worlds ranks up there with Measure of A Man as some of the top episodes of the series---it wouldn't surprise me to see some scene extensions.

There's a lovely scene with Riker and Deanna in the ready room near the beginning of Part 2 that I hope they put back in. It's in my novelization of the episode.

Your recut handled the cliffhanger waaay better than the feature length version I had on VHS as a kid which cut right to the deflector beam firing.

Its a shame there really isnt a way of having the entire cue in the feature edit, its easily the greatest one in TNG.

    Nope, Riker and Deanna.

    Here's the script version...

    15 INT. CAPTAIN'S READY ROOM

Riker stands at the window, now wearing a Captain's
rank, looks around... moves closer to Picard's
desk... and studies the empty chair... and it is a
symbol of the man... and he cannot bring himself to
sit there. So he sits in the chair he always sits
in... facing the Captain's desk. A chime. He
    reacts... stands...

    RIKER
    Come.

Troi ENTERS. Riker is glad to see her, smiles, warm.

    RIKER
    Hi.

    TROI
    You wanted to see me?

And already it's different between them... he is the
Captain now and that inherently creates an emotional
    barrier.

    RIKER
    How's the crew?

    TROI
    Throwing themselves into the work
to be done... the emotional impact
    hasn't been fully realized yet...

    RIKER
    (understands)
    I guess Starfleet training kicks
    in and takes over...

STAR TREK: "Worlds" Part Two - REV. 7/6/90 - ACT ONE 8.

    15 CONTINUED:

    TROI
    (acknowledges)
We know the risks, tell ourselves
    we're prepared for the
    consequences... and yet, something
like this cuts deeper than we can
admit at first. He was our
    Captain. It's like losing the
leader of a nation or the head
    of a family.

    RIKER
    (a beat)
He was more of a father to me than
    my own.

    Troi nods sympathetically...

    RIKER
When I saw him like that...
    mutilated...

    TROI
You did what you had to do...
nobody doubts your love for him...

    RIKER
Was there any part of him left,
    Deanna?

    TROI
    (slow)
Yes. I can still sense his
    humanity

    RIKER
    (looks down)
Then you must have sensed his
    pain...

Her silence tells him she does.

    RIKER
    I don't envy your abilities.

He cannot stay with the intensity of this moment...
    Breaking the tension --

STAR TREK: "Worlds" Part Two - REV. 7/6/90 - ACT ONE 9.

    15 CONTINUED: (2)

    RIKER
I'd better check on the progress
    of our repairs...
    (beat)
There won't be any changes... as
far as I'm concerned it's his
    ship, his crew... and everything
we do, every battle we fight, it's
    for him.
    (beat, warm)
I'm glad you're here to help me
    with this.

    TROI
    Thank you, Captain.

And as they both realize their intimacy will be never
    quite the same again.

    RIKER
    (dismissed)
    Counselor...

Their eyes say more than their words. And as she
leaves, we stay a beat on him as he begins to realize
it's lonely at the top and he glances once more at --

    16 THE DESK

and the empty chair... where he still has not been
    seated.

It might have been filmed, but that scene was never in any version (first run, syndicated, home video) that I've ever seen.

The episode is better without it in my opinion. It just covers the same ground that the Riker/Guinan conversation did.
