I think it'd be a great thing to do after maybe a third movie. To then move forward and do TNG as a companion piece. How would you do it?

Me personally, I'd combine the things that made TNG successful from season 3 onward with the dynamic of the crew starting out from season 1. Picard would be gruff and intimidating to everyone but Dr. Crusher and Data, but we'd find out that it's the stress of command that keeps him at arm's distance from everyone. He'd be older, in his late 50's much like Patrick Stewart was.

I'm gonna do some sketches and post them if anyone is interested.

I would continue the vast group of interesting and some new alien crew members. But yeah, that's almost excatly the same.

As I recall, Picard wasn't nice to anyone that first season.

I would make Picard the living embodiment of a morally and culturally stagnant Federation and Riker a radical young officer who's constantly trying to change the world and to think outside the box. The show would be centered on those two never agreeing on anything but slowly building a respect for each other's abilities. In his quest to understand humanity, Data would question and test both of them. So the series would be built around the conflict between change and tradition, just like the original series was built around the conflict between logic and emotions.

Worf would be a prisoner of war turned collaborator. The others would be recurring characters.

Make Picard younger, ditch Riker and Troi, Data would be from an advanced civilization (there to examine humanity and decide whether they are worthy of "evolution") and drop the "D" from the Enterprise registry.

Patrick Stewart was 46 or 47 when he started TNG, but Picard was apparently older.

I wonder what an Abrams-verse Enterprise D would look like?

It'd probably be as big as small moon and have really fat warp nacelles...

This would depend on how realistic you'd want to be. In reality, by the late 24th century in the Abramsverse, things would have changed so fundamentally from the prime universe that the time period TNG would be in would bear little resemblance to how we know it.

But if what you're really asking here is, how would the prime universe TNG characters act like if they were in the Abramsverse but still somehow together on a nuEnterprise-D in the same setting as TNG, then I'd have to say that they'd act exactly the way they act now, only with Vulcan destroyed 100 years before, and a nuEnterprise-shaped model on the Enterprise History Wall instead of the original Constitution class. And probably no Dr. Selar.

It really doesn't. You'd think the minds at Paramount could come up with something original with just a vast setting instead of just recycling old material.

Say like... a movie about Picard and the Stargazer.

The TNG characters really aren't iconic like the TOS characters. Recast them, and you lose too much. Data is the only real exception, so I'd start with him as the core character and build a story around him. I probably wouldn't go for the starship-going-boldly format, which has been done and then some.

Conversely, from a business perspective, the starship approach probably is the most likely to be a success, but if that were my goal, I'd stick to something in the 23rd C, and have a major character introduced in the third movie that would become the lead, or a major character in the TV series, to give the movie audience a reason to follow the story ontothe small screen.

So my real answer is: I wouldnt try to reboot TNG at all. It's not interesting creatively, and not the most likely approach to be a financial success either.

I'd aim to do this all on TV because for movies, there's no reason to leave the TOS characters after three movies. Keep using them till Abrams gets bored, or the movie audience does. (The former is more likely to happen first.)

Recast all of them. ASAP. I have the luxury/pleasure of not giving a damn. :) I'd like a Pulaski/Muldaur tribute though. Best thing that happened to TNG. IMHO.

TNG won't exist in the the Abrams-Verse. Too many things will change and there probably won't even be an Enterprise-D. So, if I were to revisit the TNG characters, I'd do something completely different and to start with I'd take a good chunk of the characters out of StarFleet entirely.

I think a TNG reboot would stick very closely to what the characters were like in the first season (with Picard being very snappish and Geordi having a flip sense of humor), but both the action content and Troi's cleavage would be increased significantly. Wesley would be a Starfleet cadet; Yar would be tactical chief with Worf as security chief; and there would be nothing remotely coy about the relationship between Picard and Crusher. Riker would be clean-shaven at the start of the movie, but would have the first signs of a beard towards the end. Data would be undeniably the ship's sciences officer.

The uniforms would be similar in style to ones from season three onward, but the branch colors would be noticeably darker in color. The props--such as phasers and tricorders--would be sleeker, but otherwise unchanged in overall design. The Enterprise-D herself would be slightly longer and wider, but would still have a wide saucer section and somewhat swept-forward nacelles.

And there will be Borg--and a new adversary even worse than the Borg that will remind us that going where no one has gone before sometimes comes with a price...

All I can see is a young Picard racing an antique sports car through a vineyard.

Well we wouldn't measure speed by warp but rather parsecs, the Klingons would be developing some sort of death star, deep space 9 would simply be known as cloud city and we don't have a prime directive because the federation are the galactic peacekeepers.

You forgot the part that he jumps out of the car just as the car falls off a cliff. :p
