It's 46 years ago where I live, so they are getting a head start on the flirting.

I believe that the proper response to any Spock-related change in canon from Star Trek XI is:

    ... Ahem.

Anyway, yeah, not sure the flirty stuff in 'Mantrap' was supposed to signify anything deeper, but I think the pairing works. It did come as a bit of a surprise the first time around, but Spock and Uhura definitely make for a good couple - similar enough in terms of implied intellectual ability and shared interests not to be baseless, but dissimilar enough to be complementary (the emotional/stoic thing).

That's very true. Even their uniform colors seem to say that, red-hot and ice-blue. :)

Spock is the ultimate chick magnet. What other guy only gets randy once every seven years?

There are pretty cool together; came out of nowhere, but thought the actors seemed to have pretty good chemistry together.

I was impressed by the mature and understanding way Uhura dealt with Spock during the turbolift scene, right after his mom died. She didn't get all mushy and insist that he react emotionally like a human would. She respected his need to try to hang onto to his Vulcan composure and simply asked him what he needed at that time . . . .

I completely agree. That was one of the best moments of the film to me, and it was very telling about who these two characters are and how they respond in a time of crisis. Uhura being there for Spock in such a mature and loving way showed that they are in it for the long haul, and I wouldn't expect anything less.

And by the way, you need to update your appearances on your website. 2011 has come and past. Lyla is beautiful. She looks really pretty and girly. I could tell she was a she before reading the name. And of course the cats look nice too. :) Forgive my poking around, but you have the link there in your signature, and I just clicked. ;)

Hey, I put that link there so people will poke around!

And, yeah, I seriously need to update that website. It's missing the Dark Knight Rises book, the upcoming Leverage book, the next Star Trek book, etc. Plus, sad to say, two of those cats are no longer with us . . . although I can't bring myself to delete their photos yet.

And that's a really old photo of Lyla, too, although I'm probably never going to change it. That's such a great photo of her!

As soon as I get out from beneath some pressing deadlines, I'll take an evening off to update it, I promise!

I am not shipper fan enough to go total gusher and say I "love" them together. I don't want Star Trek Into Twilight. That said, small doses is fine and their story did not dominate the film.

I generally think they’re okay together because from the moment I first saw them as a couple, based on Uhura's flirtations in TOS, it just felt realistically possible for them to be an item together.

Another nice Spock/Uhura moment is in "Who Mourns for Adonais." Uhura is digging around in the wiring of her console, trying to restore communications with the landing party, and Spock gives her a pep talk about he has complete faith in her ability to carry out this very difficult and challenging operation . . . .

Is this the first in context jest about the new title? As in, not from a thread about it specifically?

This will go on forever,

It came across as lame pandering to female teenagers to me. I never got the sense that their "romantic" interaction in TOS was anything more than harmless flirting at most... and Uhura was the only one doing it. Spock couldn't give less of a damn.

He obviously gives a damn in this reality.

Just as Spock had a beard and Kirk was a murdering bastard in the Mirror Universe, just as Riker was Captain of the Enterprise and the Borg were everywhere in another, (etc, etc) in this reality Spock gives a damn about Uhura.

As opposed to, say, Zarabeth or Leila Kalomi or Droxine and all the times Nimoy's Spock got a romantic subplot back on TOS?

It's not like STAR TREK has ever been a romance-free zone. Hell, even Scotty got two love interests back on the original show. Was that "pandering" to teenage girls as well?

About time Uhura finally got in on the action.

Yep, because everybody knows that only girls are interested in love and romance in movies. Real Men™ do not need any of that shit. We only like punches and guns.

    Come on.

Well, you came down from 'lame' pandering' so we are making ground.

If that (pandering) was how it made you feel the first time you witnessed it, ('cause IMO, 'first impressions' are the yardstick by which it's judged) then by all means, you're entitled to your opinion.

For me, and I'll be completely honest... it did bring me out of the story for a moment while it sank in - this ain't your fathers Star Trek. OKAY. That ain't right, my mind screamed! I instructed it to shut up, I couldn't hear the movie. I sat listening and watching for the typical emotional cues that kind of 'crap' is intended to evoke...
Nothing. I wasn't offended. They pulled it off, IMO.

That is pretty much my feelings for the entire film; they pulled it off!

Exactly. Kirk should have just pushed Edith Keeler under the truck right away instead of quoting poetry to her first. All that mushy romance stuff was just pandering to the female demographic.

But at least TOS didn't introduce a mop-topped young Beatles lookalike in a shameless attempt to attract teenage girls . . .

    Oh wait.
